OKLAHOMA CITY – The Midwestern State Mustangs found that the revenge factor was powerful for the Cameron Aggies on Friday as the third seeded Aggies knocked off the second-seeded Mustangs 5-3 in the Lone Star Conference semifinals at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
Cameron, who came into the match ranked 19th nationally, remembered the stinging 6-3 upset that the 31st ranked Mustangs handed them just 10 days ago. And the close match played accordingly.
Where the Mustangs grabbed two of three doubles points in the first meeting, Cameron reversed the tables to take two of the three in the LSC semis. All three points were decided at the limit or in a tiebreaker.
MSU got it's only doubles win at No. 2 where
Luke Joyce was paired with
Mario Urban to defeat CU's Thomas Peixoto and Patrick Eicher 9-7.
But the Aggies took the early match lead by winning 9-8 tiebreakers at Nos. 1 & 3. Santiago Romero and Nicolas Clerc beat the No. 1 team of
Vjekoslav Stipanic and
Bo Zaputovic 7-1 in the tie break. Then the Aggies No. 3 team Duje Janic and Jeff Sasser took
Chad Meeks and
Jarrod Liston 7-3 in their tiebreak.
"It was the type of match I really expected," said MSU Coach
Scott Linn. "They were out for us and it was a tough contest. We played tight in the tiebreakers, and that was the difference in the match."
Clerc and Janic extended the Aggie lead with wins at No. 4 and No. 5, with Clerc beating Zaputovic 6-1, 6-3 and Janic downing Tiago Villarinho 6-4, 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker.
But the Mustangs hung in with three set victories at Nos. 2 and 6. Urband beat Peixoto 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, while Rory deBoer downed Eicher 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 6.
The deciding match came at the top, where the Aggies Romero beat Stipanic. The No. 1s split sets, each winning 6-3, before Romero handed Stipanic a 6-2 loss in the deciding set.
The No. 3 contest between Joyce and CU's Manuel Barroetavena was pulled from the court after the Aggies clinched the win, with the match even.
The Aggies (17-7) advance to face top-seeded Abilene Christian on Saturday morning at 9:30.
"I'm very proud of this team," Linn added. "We have a great group of seniors and they put it on the line every time for us this year, like they did today."
The Mustangs (14-6) wait until next week to learn if they will be selected for the NCAA Tournament.
