DALLAS - Midwestern State continued its roll in Tuesday afternoon's final round of the Audible Closed Championship played at the Par-72, 5,985-yard course at the Golf Club of Dallas.
Paced by the one-two punch of sophomore
Kendra Whittley and
Taylor Klutts, the Mustangs dusted the six NCAA Division II squads to finish as runner-up to host Redlands Community College.
"This is the best overall performance we've had since we started the program," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "We got off to a good start and we played well enough to put ourselves in position to win. This was a good test for the girls."
Whittley finished off three consistent rounds with scores of 79, 71 and 76 for a 10-over total of 226.
"Kendra managed the course well," Ray said. "She always chips and putts well and she did a really good job of moving the ball on the fairway."
Whittley was one of just two golfers to card a sub-Par round at the three-round event and finished behind top individual medalist Elcin Ulu of Redlands CC. Ulu posted two sub-Par rounds for scores of 71, 72 and 69 for a 4-under 212.
Klutts also managed three sub-80 rounds as the Lake Kiowa native tallied scores of 79, 75 and 75 to close with a 13-over total of 229 - good for a fifth place showing.
"Taylor really kept the ball in play," Ray said. "Really, either she or Kendra ever got in trouble off of the tee."
The Mustangs also leaned on a pair of countable scores each from
Megan Richardson,
Lauren Romines and
Lindsay Burkhart in the complete team effort.
Richardson notched scores of 81, 80 and 77 to close with a 22-over total of 238 to finish tied for 15th, while Romines registered a 20th place showing with scores of 81, 76 and 82 for a 23-over total of 239.
Burkhart improved in each round from 84 to 79 to a final round 77 for a total of 240 (+24) to finish tied for 21st.
"Lindsey got off to a tough start, and then recovered to finish 5-over for the day," Ray said. "She really played great golf."
Senior
Kyla Whittley posted a 28th place showing while competing as an individual medalist. The Wall native carded rounds of 81, 86 and 79 for a total of 246 (+30).
The Mustangs host the Midwestern State Invitational on March 21 and 22 at The Champions Course at Weeks Park.
