Mustangs set for 2011 Lone Star Conference Crossover

Setting the Stage

It's a big regional weekend for No. 3 Midwestern State the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament at Texas Bank Sports Complex in San Angelo, Texas.
 
Four of the Mustangs' six opponents were a part of the first release of the 2011 South Central Region rankings as released earlier this week by the NCAA Division II Softball Committee.
 
MSU - ranked second in the region - opens the event against the top-ranked Angelo State (No. 2 in the NFCA D2 Top 25) Friday at 12:30 p.m. before facing another regionally ranked opponent later in the afternoon - No. 8 Abilene Christian - at 4:30 p.m.
 
The Mustangs continue the tough weekend Saturday against Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. The Hoggies gave Midwestern one of its three losses by a 1-0 count on Feb. 12 in Kingsville.
 
Midwestern then takes on the region's No. 5-ranked club in West Texas A&M (ranked 15th in the NFCA D2 Top 25) Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
 
The Mustangs close the tournament Sunday against Texas Woman's and Tarleton State - No. 10 in the South Central Region rankings - at noon and 2 p.m., respectively.

About the Lone Star Conference Crossover

The 2011 Lone Star Conference Crossover is set for Friday-Sunday at Texas Bank Sports Complex on 1651 Rio Concho Driver in San Angelo, Texas.
 
Here are the directions to the tournament site:
 
From Northeast (Abilene/Dallas)
 
Take the Bell St. exit off of US-277/US-67 and head south
The Texas Bank Sports Complex will be on the left after about 1.5 miles
 
From the Northwest (Amarillo/Lubbock)
 
Continue on US-87 South through the north part of town
Get on the Houston Harte Expressway (Loop 306) heading east
Take the Bell St. exit and head south
The Texas Bank Sports Complex will be on the left after about 1.5 miles
 
From the Southeast (San Antonio/Kingsville)
 
US-87 will join US-277 and form S. Bryant Blvd., continue north into town
Turn right at Avenue L – stoplight, rustic furniture on the far right corner
Travel 1.7 miles then turn left at Bell St and go north
After about a mile, the Texas Bank Sports Complex is on the right

Mustangs Quick Notes

Midwestern State is off to its best start in program history through 33 games at 30-3 which is one game better than last season's 29-4 mark.
 
The Mustangs stand at the top of the Lone Star Conference in several major categories ranking sixth in NCAA II in ERA (1.18), 11th in batting average (.356) and 18th in fielding percentage (.971).
 
(3 Megan Chartier)   Chartier has appeared in 28 games and started 11 games - eight in right field and three at designated player. The Gatesville High product is hitting a career-best .314 with seven stolen bases.
 
(4 McKenzie Sickler) Sickler has started each of Midwestern's 33 games this season starting the first 18 at first base before making the move to shortstop for the last 15. The Troy, Texas native is hitting .287 with three doubles, two triples and one home run with 14 RBIs will hitting from the No. 9 spot in the order.
 
(5 Nicki Duff) Duff rides a three-game hitting streak into the LSC Crossover while going 4-for-10 with two runs scored and two RBIs during the stretch. The Plano East product and two-time All-LSC North performer has struggled to a .239 average this spring, but is a .322 career hitter. Duff is perfect in eight stolen base opportunities this season.
 
(6 Elena Bennett) Bennett tops the Lone Star Conference and ranks seventh in NCAA Division II with a .495 batting average. The sophomore from Carrollton has already set the MSU single season stolen base mark with 26 and is the program's career leader with 51. Bennett has collected a hit in 29 of her last 30 games and is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak.
 
(7 Kallie Noble) Noble has appeared in 20 games this season primarily as a pinch runner. The freshman from Albany has scored nine runs and stole a base.
 
(9 Alyson Reynolds) Reynolds is one of three active players on the MSU roster to hit 15 homers. The senior from Keller has started 14 of the last 15 games at first base and is hitting .333 with four doubles, a triple and three home runs while driving in 18 runs this season. She has also handled 64 chances without an error this season.
 
(10 Mallory Mooney) Mooney is on pace for her best season yet. The junior third baseman is hitting .333 with eight doubles and six homer while driving in a team-high 32 runs this season.
 
(12 Carey Campbell) Campbell has started each of the Mustangs' 33 games at second base. The sophomore is hitting .278 with a pair of doubles and two homers while driving in 11 RBIs.
 
(14 Courtney Bingham) Bingham has missed the last 10 games with injury after going for multiple hits in six of her last nine games. The sophomore from Arlington ranks second in the nation with five triples and is enjoying a stellar campaign hitting .453 with six doubles, five triples and two homers while driving in a team-high 32 runs.
 
(15 Amanda Potysman) Potysman has raised her average 74 points to .400 since suffering through a 1-for-6 showing against Abilene Christian on Feb. 22. The senior utility player is hitting .542 over her last nine games (13-of-24) with a double, a homer and three RBIs.
 
(16 Kim Jerrick) Jerrick is the reigning LSC North Division Player of the Week after clubbing homers in three consecutive at bats Sunday against Delta State and St. Edward's. The freshman catcher ranks fifth in the conference and 69th in the nation with a .430 batting average. Jerrick would be fourth in the LSC with a .785 slugging percentage with four doubles and eight homers with a team-best 32 RBIs.
 
(17 Kristina Gutierrez) Gutierrez (12-1) bounced back from her only loss of the season to three-hit Delta State for her conference leading eighth shutout of the season Sunday afternoon. The senior from Pearland tops the conference and is sixth in NCAA II averaging 10.6 strikeouts per seven innings. Gutierrez boasts the second-best ERA in the LSC at 1.33.
 
(24 Courtney Ford) Ford has appeared in seven games this season including three starts at the catcher position. The freshman from Graham hasn't appeared in a game since Feb. 13 due to injury.
 
(25 Brittney Tanner) The reigning LSC North Pitcher of the Week has allowed more than one earned run in a game just once in her last 17 appearances. Tanner boasts a conference leading 1.07 ERA which ranks 15th in NCAA Division II. The senior from Burkburnett High has permitted just one earned run in her last 26 innings which includes a 1-hit, 2-hit and a 3-hit shutout over the time. Her 11-strikeout performance last Friday against St. Mary's was her ninth 10-plus strikeout effort of the season.

About the Competition

No. 2 Angelo State (Friday, 12:30 p.m.)   The Rambelles (27-3) are 9-3 over their last 12 games since opening the season with 18-straight wins. This will be a rematch of last season's super regional series and the first meeting between the rivals this season.
Senior first baseman Kaycee Taylor leads a potent Angelo State lineup with a .380 average with nine doubles, one triple and four homers while driving in 18 runs.
She is just one of seven players hitting .300 this season including freshman outfielder Morgan Spearman (.369, 4 2B, 1 HR, 14 RBI), junior third baseman DeeShanaLynn Tafi (.360, 7 2B, 5 HR, 25 RBIs), sophomore shortstop Chelsey Walters (.359, 7 2B, 4 3B, 22 RBI), senior outfielder Brittany Astle (.325, 2 2B, 1 HR, 13 RBI), senior second baseman Alix Dean (.313, 10 2B, 17 RBI) and sophomore catcher Kacie Easley (7 2B, 3 HR, 22 RBI).
The Rambelles are led in the circle by junior Clarissa Molina (13-1, 1.33 ERA) and freshman Mary Kate McKay (10-1, 1.84 ERA).
Angelo State owns a 14-10 edge in the all-time series, but the Mustangs have won five of the last nine.
 
  
Abilene Christian (Friday, 4:30 p.m.) The Wildcats (20-15) had a seven-game winning streak snapped when they lost the final two games of a three-game set last weekend against Incarnate Word.
ACU's deep lineup is paced by senior outfielder Melissa Mendoza who ranks fifth in the LSC with a .437 batting average with 14 doubles and three homers while driving in 22 runs.
She is joined by six other players with .300 averages including junior middle infielder Megan Brigance (.373, 3 2B, 5 HR, 16 RBI), junior outfielder Tiana Tuinei (.356, 5 2B, 15 RBI), junior middle infielder Sarah Martinez (.354, 6 2B, 5 HR, 19 RBI), junior third baseman Valentina Nabayan (.353, 2 2B, 9 HR, 28 RBI), senior corner infielder Candice Miller (.333, 5 2B, 1 3B, 19 RBI) and junior corner infielder Brianna Fowlkes (.300, 3 2B , 1 3B, 2 HR, 16 RBI).
Senior Brittany Rexroat (8-5, 3.72 ERA) and sophomore Shelby Hall (8-7, 4.24 ERA) are the Wildcats' top options in the circle.
Midwestern State owns a 25-14 edge in the overall series against ACU and has won the last seven meetings between the programs.
 
Texas A&M-Kingsville (Saturday, 10:30 a.m.)   The Javelinas (20-16) have won seven of their last 10 games coming into the LSC Crossover, but are coming off of a loss in the final game of a three-game set last weekend at Eastern New Mexico.
TAMUK is led by reigning LSC South Player of the Week Kaycee Bryan. The junior center fielder is hitting .370 with nine doubles, five triples and a homer while driving in 18 runs and stealing 16 bases.
She is one of six Hoggies hitting better than .300 including junior pitcher/first baseman Lindsey Brown (.360, 11 2B, 4 HR, 17 RBI), sophomore pitcher/first baseman Amanda Arriaga (.349, 4 2B, 3 HR, 23 RBI), junior middle infielder Roxanne Rodriguez (.319, 4 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 20 RBI), junior third baseman Yvette Berlanga (.319, 6 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 17 RBI) and sophomore shortstop Rose Stubbs (.308, 4 2B, 1 3B, 12 RBI, 10 SB).
Arriaga (11-12, 3.42) is Texas A&M-Kingsville's top option in the circle and the only one of five Hoggie hurlers to boast more than 10 appearances.
Midwestern State owns an 8-5 edge in its all-time series against the Javelinas, but the teams have split a pair of games this season. The Mustangs have won five of the last six.
 
No. 15 West Texas A&M (Saturday, 2:30 p.m.)   The Lady Buffs (25-8) have limped to an 8-7 mark over their last 15 games after opening the season with a 17-1 mark.
Lone Star Conference South Division Preseason Player of the Year Kim Lecomte leads a potent West Texas A&M attack. The junior outfielder is second in the league with a .443 average and leads the LSC with 10 homers and 38 RBIs.
She is just one of six Lady Buffs carrying at least .300 batting averages including senior infielder Katilyn Witte (.387, 7 2B, 5 HR, 35 RBI), senior outfielder Kasey Henderson (.382, 8 2B, 17 RBI, 30 SB), senior infielder Christie Russell (.365, 4 2B, 3 HR, 14 RBI), freshman infielder Alyssa Lemos (.361, 8 2B, 1 HR, 18 RBI), and sophomore Meghan Slattery (.324, 2 2B, 7 HR, 24 RBI, 10 SB).
LSC South Preseason Pitcher of the Year Shelbey Cockrell (13-5, 1.98 ERA) and junior Marci Womack (12-3, 2.78 ERA) pace West Texas A&M in the circle.
Midwestern State owns a commanding 15-1 edge in its all time series against West Texas A&M and won the last six games between the programs.
 
 
Texas Woman's (Sunday, Noon)   The Pioneers (21-12) roll into the LSC Crossover having won nine of their last 11 games.
TWU is paced by the nation's stolen base leader Bailey Vrazel. The freshman infielder is hitting .422 with a pair of triples, seven RBI and is perfect in 49 stolen base attempts this season.
She is one of six Pioneers boasting at least .300 batting averages including junior catcher Tiffany Weise (.402, 10 2B, 2 HR, 22 RBI), sophomore outfielder/pitcher Kayla Williams (.383, 1 2B, 2 3B, 15 RBI, 28 SB), sophomore infielder Jordan Readicker (.376, 9 2B, 1 3B, 7 HR, 36 RBI), freshman outfielder/pitcher Katie Hines (.354, 8 2B, 2 3B, 7 HR, 26 RBI) and junior outfielder Addision Staley (.303, 18 SB).
Williams (8-2, 2.77 ERA) and sophomore Lizzy Kelly (7-2, 3.50 ERA) paced the Pioneers in the circle.
Midwestern State owns a 15-4 advantage in the all time series against Texas Woman's as the Mustangs have won 14 of the last 15.
 
Tarleton State (Sunday, 2 p.m.)   The TexAnns (16-12-1) have lost four of their last six games coming into the LSC Crossover, but are coming off of a 4-3 win over then-No. 1 Angelo State last weekend in Stephenville.
Tarleton is led by senior outfielder and former MSU player Rebecca Wessells, who is hitting .389 with four doubles and two triples with seven RBIs while notching 17 stolen bases. Wessels competed for the Mustangs as a freshman outfielder in 2008.
Junior pitcher Samantha Swanda (.302, 6 2B, 7 HR, 27 RBI) is the only other TexAnn hitting over .300, while another former MSU player - sophomore catcher Brittany Dumas - is hitting .265 with three homers and nine RBIs.
Swanda (8-8, 2.53 ERA) and junior Katie Smith (6-2, 2.71 ERA) top Tarleton in the circle.
Midwestern State owns an 8-5 advantage in the all time series over the TexAnns and has won the last four contests between the programs.
