OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Midwestern State Mustangs dropped only one point in claiming both men's and women's matches Thursday against Washburn.
The 29th ranked men clobbered the 33rd ranked Ichabods 8-1 at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. MSU improved to 10-2 overall and Washburn fell to 5-5.
The 50th ranked MSU women ran their record to 10-4 with a 9-0 shutout of the Lady Blues (6-3).
The Mustangs men got a pair of wins from
Mario Urban and
Bo Zaputovic. The duo claimed No. 2 doubles 8-1 over Bobby Florence and Samir Haikai before winning their respective singles matches. Urban downed Arkadiusz Kozaczuk 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1, and Zaputovic won at No. 4 over Haikai 6-1, 6-1.
Luke Joyce teamed with
Vjekoslav Stipanic to win at No. 1 doubles 8-2 over Kozaczuk and Paschal Laucht, then beat Florence at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-0.
Rory de Boer won at No. 5 singles against Tyler Nelson 6-3, 6-0. The only loss came at No. 2 where Laucht defeated Stipanic 6-3, 6-4.
MSU got default wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
The MSU women picked up victories all around with the sweep, their fourth of the season.
Rozike van Rensburg and
Alex Odell-Michels led the way, taking down Washburn's No. 1 doubles pair of Alyssa Castillo and Jamie Blackim 8-6. Each followed suit in singles as van Rensburg beat Whitley Zitsch 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, and Odell-Michels beat Elektra Hunter 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2.
Leah Roberts and
Abbie Lewis also turned in strong performances with their 8-2 doubles win at No. 2 over Zitsch and Hunter. Roberts beat Blackim at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-1, while Lewis won at No. 4 over Castillo 6-3, 6-2.
Lindsey Holcomb and
Ashley Huse won at No. 3 doubles 6-1 over Annie Doole and Kristin McKee when McKee was injured and defaulted the point.
Holcomb then dispatched Doole 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Huse won at No. 6 over Brittany Osborne 6-1, 6-4.
