Hagan-led Mustangs rip Angelo State, 83-59

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Chris Hagan just wasn't going to let Midwestern State lose Wednesday night at D.L.Ligon Coliseum.

The senior guard poured in 22 of his game-high 36 points to lead the Mustangs to an 83-59 Lone Star Conference South Division win over Angelo State.

The Mustangs can clinch a spot in next week's Lone Star Conference Championship in Bartlesville, Okla. with a win at Abilene Christian or if Angelo State falls at home to Tarleton State on Saturday.

The Mustangs and Wildcats tip off at 7 p.m. Saturday at Moody Coliseum.

Hagan fell one shy of Nolan Richardson's single-game mark for made 3-pointers with six makes in the first half and three more in the second as the Mustangs used a 19-0 run late in the first half to take control of the contest as they led 45-29 at the intermission.

Angelo State's Richard Thomas tallied 16 of his team-high 20 points in the second half, but it was not enough to make it contest even paired with the Rams' 14-7 edge in foul calls.

The Mustangs made it a laugher by pushing the advantage to a commanding 28 points after Darrick Thomas slammed home his second dunk of the contest then David Terrell delivered the highlight of the night with a thunderous follow dunk of a rare Hagan miss as MSU would lead 80-52 when Hagan converted a four-point play with 2:40 to go.

Senior Charlie Logan, who finished with a season-high 16 points and seven rebounds, even connected his lone career 3-pointer with 1:15 to go before leaving to a rousing hometown ovation.

Darrick Thomas pitched in 10 points and five rebounds, while Terrell added nine points and seven rebounds.

Midwestern clinched its 28th 20-win season to improve to 20-7 while Angelo State fell to 11-14 and 7-6.

The Mustangs would clinch a No. 2 with a win over ACU and if Eastern New Mexico beats West Texas A&M Saturday in Portales. If the Buffs and Mustangs win, MSU goes in as the No. 3 seed.
