SAN ANTONIO - Midwestern State had a hard time shaking off the rust in its spring opener at the Lady Rattler Roundup at the Par-72, 5,933-yard Pecan Valley Golf Course.

The Mustangs struggled to an opening round total of 330 for a 10th place opening round showing showing.

"It was a tough day for us," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "Our short game was not good at all as a team. The course is tree-lined, so you have to hit the fairways. We looked rusty today, but hopefully we will bounce back tomorrow and have a better day."

The team was a big sluggish having not seen the course throughout much of the month due to the local wintry weather leaving the courses unplayable.

Megan Richardson enjoyed a stellar as the sophomore from Midlothian carded an opening round 76 (+4) to stand five strokes off the pace of individual leader Wallis Spears of St. Edward's, who recorded a 71 (-1).

But Richardson's round counted only for individual medalist play.

Sophomore Kendra Whittley had the top countable score with a 78 (+6) to stand tied for 12th followed by fellow sophomores Taylor Klutts (82 (+10)/33rd), Lauren Romines (83 (+11)/36th) and Lindsay Burkhart (87 (+5)/50th) while senior Kyla Whittley fired an 87 (+5/50th).

The Mustangs go into Tuesday's final round 33 strokes behind tournament leading St. Edward's who fired a team total of 297 (+9).
