No. 23 Midwestern suffers first 2011 defeat, splits at Texas A&M-Kingsville Invitational

KINGSVILLE, Texas - Midwestern State's ran its season-opening streak to nine games before falling to host Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday afternoon in the TAMUK Invitational at Hubert Field.

The Mustangs rolled to a 9-1 run-rule win in eight innings over Texas A&M International earlier in the afternoon before Lindsey Brown hurled a six-hit shutout to lift the homestanding Javelinas to a 1-0 win.

MSU closes the three-day tournament Sunday with games against Southern Arkansas at 9 a.m. before drawing a rematch with Texas A&M-Kingsville in the finale at 1 p.m.

The Mustangs erupted for five runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to turn a 1-0 deficit against Texas A&M International into a run-rule win.

Sophomore outfielder Elena Bennett paced MSU's 12-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while Nicki Duff and Kim Jerrick had two hits each.

Senior Kristina Gutierrez allowed one run on six hits while striking out eight and walking one to move to 4-0 on the season.

Texas A&M-Kingsville managed just four hits against MSU ace Brittney Tanner, but the Hoggies placed two of the in the bottom of the first to scratch out the lone run of the game.

Rose Stubbs roped a leadoff single to right field, advanced to second on Kaycee Bryan's sacrifice and on to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Amanda Arriaga's single to left field.

The Mustangs managed just one runner past second base as Brown notched four strikeouts and walked two to move to 4-1.

Tanner suffered her first loss of the season to fall ot 5-1 despite limiting TAMUK to a run on four hits as she fanned 12 and walked one.

Bennett used her speed to leg out three bunt singles to pace the MSU attack.
