Mustangs fall to Central Missouri in two OTs, 97-96

Box Score

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State did everything but close out Central Missouri Friday night in the Ashbrook Classic.

The Jennies staved off deficits late in the second half and first overtime before Nicole Caddell put back her own miss with 0.9 seconds remaining to allow UCM to escape with a 97-96 win in double overtime.

Central Missouri's three-headed attack of Shaquandra Wiggins, Caddell and Saraethea Brown offset a career night by MSU senior guard Savannah Carver, who knocked down five 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 26 points.

And it appeared the Mustangs had sealed when Carver connected on a free throw give the Mustangs an 81-74 lead with 1:27 to play.

But Caddell hit a driving layup and the Jennies stole the inbounds pass to set up a short jumper by Wiggins to pull the Jennies to within 83-81 with 30 seconds to play in regulation.

Kirsti Degelia connected on one of two charity tosses on the other end of the floor before Brown beat the buzzer for 3-pointer from the left wing to send the game to overtime tied at 84-84.

Midwestern jumped out to a quick leader in overtime as Carver nailed a trey from the left corner and freshman forward Andrea Carter knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Mustangs an 89-84 lead with 3:57 to go.

The teams exchanged jumpers before Wiggins hit a layup in traffic to pull UCM within 91-88 with 2:03 to go.

The Mustangs had chances to build the lead further, but missed three shots from the field and a pair of charity tosses allowing the Jennies to pull within 91-89 on a Taylor Hanson free throw with 9 second to play.

Once again, Caddell came up big for the Jennies by rebounding Hanson ensuing miss and laying it back in to knot the game at 91-91 with 6 seconds to play.

MSU freshman Shatoia Gober sprinted down the floor and beat the buzzer with a 3-point attempted, but it rattled out to send the game to a second overtime.

Again, on the strength of Skyler Warrick 3-pointer with 2:32 to go, the Mustangs took a 96-93 edge into the final minute of the period.

Wiggins would cut the lead to one on a driving layup and Caddell put back her own miss in the closing seconds to give the Jennies the win.

Wiggins finished with a game-high 34 points and pulled down 18 rebounds, while Caddell rolled up 25 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Brown knocked down four 3-pointers to finish with 18 points.

Carver paced a quartet of Mustangs in double figures and was joined by Warrick (13 points, 5 rebounds), freshman Dianna Jones (13 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists) and freshman Shatoia Gober (10 points, 7 rebounds).

Carter completed an all-around game with eight points, 13 rebounds, four steal and two blocked shots.
