Catney leads Mustangs to 5-0 rout of West Texas A&M

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's Katy Catney tallied her first two collegiate goals to lead the Mustangs to a dominating 5-0 win over West Texas A&M in Lone Star Conference action Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

"Some of the players that are younger are starting their way into contributing roles," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "Katy's a talented player and it was just a matter of playing time."

Catney spun her first career tally on a bending serve on a corner kick with a little help from sophomore midfielder Lainie Lambert who ran just enough interference on West Texas A&M goalkeeper Yvette Bedoy to allow the ball to drop into the goal to give MSU a 3-0 halftime lead.

Midwestern, who were statistically limited to two shots in a controversial 2-1 double overtime loss in Canyon last month, jumped on the Lady Buffs with a two goals in the opening 15 minutes.

Junior midfielder Alyssa Cooper drilled a high shot in from just inside the 18-yard box on a feed from senior forward Kelsey Hill in the game's 8th minute for the first score of the contest.

Seven minutes later, junior Megan Barnhart forced her way into the box and beat two WT defenders for a 2-0 lead.

"It's really not about the score tonight, but more about the intensity and effort," Trimble said. "It's just a big win to help us accomplish our goals this season."

Midwestern improved to 6-3-2 on the season and took over sole possession of second place in the Lone Star Conference with a 4-3-1 mark.

Catney added a second goal when she collected a rebound off of a Mickey Brown blast to score in the 69th minute then assisted Brown's second goal of the season on a perfectly threaded through ball in the 82nd minute of play.

The Mustangs take on Eastern New Mexico Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

West Texas A&M fell to 6-5-1 and 3-4-1.
