Mustangs survive Cameron to claim fifth-straight win

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State reached more into a new comfort zone Tuesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs still adjusting to recent lineup change outlasted Cameron for a 25-21, 27-25, 18-25, 17-25, 15-11 Lone Star Conference decision to claim a fifth straight victory to improve to 11-6 overall and to 3-5 in league play.

"We were able to gain confidence over the weekend," MSU coach Venera Flores-Stafford said. "The girls have gotten comfortable with what we've done, then you start winning and things start to snow ball."

With sophomore Brandi Flores becoming more of a fixture in the lineup, the Mustangs swept its four matches at the Pitt State Regional Challenge

Flores finished the night with just five kills against Cameron, but showed her versatility with 14 digs on the back row as the Mustangs worked the plan against slow attacking Aggies.

"These are the most coachable girls I've ever coached," Flores said. "The do what we ask and they implemented our strategy to a T."

The Mustangs' defensive execution forced CU into 18 attack errors in the opening two sets before the Aggies countered to force a fifth set.

"It came down to the fifth set on who was going to push the hardest," Flores-Stafford said. "We were fortunate to come out on top."

Senior middle blocker Miranda Byrd clustered three of her team-high 16 kills around a Flores service ace to put the Mustangs up 6-1 in the deciding set.

Cameron pushed back to claw to within 13-11 but Flores combined with Caitlin Wallace for a block before putting the match away with a kill.

Senior outside hitter Hillary White notched her team-best fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 14 digs while Wallace added 11 kills and three blocks and Stewart had 10 kills.

Senior libero Kiara Jordan led back row effort with 33 digs.

Adrienne Lawson (18 kills, 13 digs) and Malyssa Acton (19 kills, three blocks) paced Cameron which fell to 10-6 and 4-4.
