#12 Mustangs battle St. Edward's to scoreless draw

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 12 Midwestern State battled St. Edward's (Texas) to a scoreless draw Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

"It's disappointing to have so many shots and no goals to show for it," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "SEU worked hard, but we have to learn to break teams down and finish."

The Mustangs controlled a dominating 24-4 edge in shots including a 7-1 advantage in shots on goals, but were unable to find the back of the net as MSU slipped to 10-3-1 on the season despite some solid chances late in regulation and overtime.

Junior forward David Freeland broke free to place a pair of shots on goal in the first overtime and a third shot sailed narrowly to the right of the far post as time expired.

But MSU, who controlled a 9-0 shot advantage in overtime, was unable to place a shot on frame in the final overtime.

The draw did allow the Mustangs to extend their home field unbeaten streak to 40 matches dating back to the 2007 season.

Redshirt-freshman Noah Fazekas had to make just one save to preserve his first career shutout behind a back line that limited the Hilltoppers to four total shots.

"Defensively, we played well," Elder said. "We did a good job of stepping to the ball and playing physical."

Midwestern hits the road to face Northeastern State Friday night in Tahlequah.
