SAN ANTONIO - No. 22 Midwestern State rolled up 586 yards of offense in a dominating 45-14 win over Incarnate Word Saturday night at Benson Stadium.
Junior quarterback
Brandon Kelsey accounted for 315 yards of total offense passing 210 and three touchdowns while rushing for a career-high 105 more yards and another score for the Mustangs, who improved to 4-0 for the sixth-straight year.
"He's getting better every week," MSU coach
Bill Maskill said. "His ability to run keeps the defense honest and opens up holes for the running backs."
Senior
Lester Bush pounded the Cardinals for 103 yards and on 15 carries while sophomore
Peter Smith added 78 yards on 14 totes and another score as the Mustangs amassed at least 290 rushing yards for the third consecutive week.
"We call (Bush) affectionately 'Bull' and he ran over some people tonight," Maskill said. "The offensive line is doing a great job of opening up holes."
But Kelsey also stung Incarnate Word through the air in the early going as he connected with
David Little and
Sheldon Galloway from 7 and 15 yards out to allow the Mustangs to surge to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
Little finished the night with seven receptions to record fifth career 100-yard receiving night with 136 yards reaching the end zone twice.
Midwestern pushed the advantage to 21-0 on Bush's 5-yard touchdown carry with 9:59 remaining in the second quarter and had a pass intercepted in the end prior to the half after the defense stoned the Cardinals at the 1-yard to keep the first-half shutout intact.
The Mustangs fired out of the locker room to score on its first two possessions of the second half. Kelsey hit Little on a 19-yard screen pass at the 11:08 mark of the third quarter, and then dashed 24 yards for another TD three minutes to push the MSU advantage to 35-0.
At that point, the Mustangs' defense had limited the Cardinals to 107 yards of offense, but freely substituted the remainder of the game as UIW would wind up with 352 yards.
MSU kicker
Greg Saladino connected on a 29-yard field and Smith scored from 1 yard out to account for the Mustangs' fourth quarter scoring.
Senior linebacker
Ty Duncan paced the defense with eight tackles.
