EDMOND, Okla.- Big games are won by the team with the biggest will to win.
No. 21 Midwestern State has shown time after time it is generally the team that will do what it takes to win.
That wasn't the case Saturday night at Hamilton Fieldhouse where No. 18 Central Oklahoma controlled the glass and hit the clutch shots to come away with a 68-61 Lone Star Conference crossover win.
UCO senior All America Dauntae Williams worked for 24 points and 15 rebounds to key the effort for the Bronchos.
"You have to really hand it to Dauntae, he really came out and went after the ball tonight," MSU coach
Grant McCasland said. "We came up a little short and this will be a great learning experience for us. It will be a great learning tool going into South Division play."
The loss snapped MSU's 12-game winning streak and a 22-game stretch of dominance over LSC North Division foes as the Mustangs dropped to 12-2 on the season.
Central Oklahoma held a commanding 43-34 edge on the glass which resulted in a 17-1 edge in second-chance points as Bronchos never trailed in the second half en route to improving to 14-2 on the season.
UCO also extended its home court winning streak to 17 games.
Midwestern State held several 2-point leads late in the first half before the Bronchos rallied to score the final four points of the opening to take a 34-30 lead into the half.
The Mustangs charged back with a 6-0 run fueled by a
Chris Hagan layup as the senior guard assisted a pair of buckets to
Charlie Logan to knot the game at 36-36 with 17:07 to play.
Central Oklahoma took control from there as Carl Curry capped an 11-2 run to push the Broncho advantage to 47-38 with 13:35 to go.
The Mustangs managed to trim the lead to four points despite being limited to a single field goal over a 10:55 stretch as
Deuce Nichols hit one of two free throws and
Thomas Colbert hit a pair of free throws at the 9:06 mark.
Hagan was fouled near midcourt at the 7:50 mark of the second half then the UCO bench was whistled for a technical foul allow him to knock down all four freebies to cut the Broncho advantage to 52-48.
That's as close the Mustangs would get despite
Michael Loyd canning consecutive treys to pull MSU to wihtin 61-56 with 2:28 to play.
But UCO guard Jarrod McDaniel, who came into the contest as a 41.2-percent foul shooter (14-of-34) knocked 7-of-8 free throws to put the game away for the Bronchos.
"I thought we came out and looked a little fatigued," McCasland said. "All of the credit goes to Central because they are hard to guard. They space you on the floor with constant mismatches, but I was very proud of our defensive effort."
MSU limited the Bronchos to 36.7-percent shooting from the floor, but could only manage 35.2 percent on the offensive end.
Hagan paced the Mustangs with 18 points and six assists, while
Michael Loyd dropped in 14 points and four rebounds before fouling out in 24 minutes.
The Mustangs kickoff LSC South Division play Wednesday night against Angelo State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Stephens Arena.
