Newman overtakes Mustangs, 73-71

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Rhea Codio poured in a game-high 25 points as Newman (Kan.) erased a 12-point second-half deficit to claim a 73-71 non-conference win over Midwestern State Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Mustangs, who fell to 4-6 on the season.

MSU returns to action Thursday night against nationally ranked Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Midwestern expanded a six-point halftime advantage to 12 points when Katiya Jackson hit a jumper from the elbow to give the Mustangs a 47-35 with 15:24 remaining.

But the Jets (9-4) answered with a 9-0 run to cut the MSU advantage to 48-45 on Celeste Key's layup with 12:12 to play.

The Mustangs maintained the advantage throughout the better part of the second half before Newman took its first lead of the second half on a Codio 3-pointer to post a 63-62 lead with 3:10 to play.

MSU's Nolisha Markham connected on a pair of free throws as the Mustangs jumped back ahead, but the Jets remained persistent claiming a lead with 36 seconds to play on a Key layup after the Jets moved to within a point when Markham was whistled for an intentional foul with 38 seconds to play.

Codio converted two more charity tosses to push the Jet advantage to 72-69 with with 19 seconds to play.

Markham earned an opportunity for a traditional three-point play when she put back Savannah Carver's off the mark 3-pointer with four seconds to play.

She missed the free throw before Jazman Patterson grabbed the rebound and was fouled on her way up by Newman's Samantha Soyez with 3.4 seconds to play.

Patterson missed the first free throw before the Mustangs were whistled for a lane violation.
