Incarnate Word pounds glass to beat Mustangs, 60-51

SAN ANTONIO - Midwestern State's road woes continued Saturday afternoon at McDermott Center as Incarnate Word crashed the glass to best the Mustangs 60-51 in Lone Star Conference South Division play.

"To Incarnate Word's credit, they played really well today," MSU coach Noel Johnson said. "They wanted it more and their post players played really well. On the other end of the floor, we just couldn't score."

Incarnate Word's one-two punch of junior forward Chloe Wallace and freshman Ifunanya Mora provided the the inside muscle for the Cardinals.

Wallace scored 11 points and completed a double-double with 14 rebounds while Mora poured in 18 of her game-high 20 points in the second half to go along with eight rebounds to allow UIW to control the glass (41-26).

"Rebounding is going to win the game and that's what we put on our board," Johnson said. "When you get out-rebounded by 15 no matter where you play, you're going to lose the game."

It was just the second time this season the Mustangs were beaten on the glass and the first time since falling at Southwestern Oklahoma 11 games ago.

But the Mustangs managed to stay in the game despite trailing by as eight points midway through the second half when Mora connected on a runner in the lane with 9:59 to play.

The Mustangs battled back over the next five minutes to pull within a point at 48-47 when freshman guard Kirsti Degelia hit a running jumper with 4:25 to play, but the Mustangs would go cold from the field and were unable to find the range from the perimeter as the finished the game 0-for-8 from beyond the arc.

"We've got to have someone hit a 3," Johnson said. " We never settled in and hit a shot behind the arc and you've got to be tough and hit those on the road."

Senior forward Nolisha Markham paced the Mustangs with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field while Jazman Patterson finished with 12 points and six rebounds and Degelia chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.

"We felt like we could attack them inside both on the block and on the drive," Johnson said.

UIW's Katy Cooke connected on three first-half 3-pointers to allow the Cardinals to lead 30-27 at the break and finished with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.

MSU fell to 5-11 on the season and to 1-3 in LSC South play as the Mustangs dropped to 0-8 in games played away from D.L. Ligon Coliseum this season.

The Mustangs continue on the road to face Texas A&M-Kingsville Wednesday night at Steinke Center. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Incarnate Word improved to 6-10 and 2-2.
