DALLAS - The all-around numbers went Midwestern State's way Tuesday night at the Mustangs rolled to a 3-1 win over Dallas Baptist at Burg Center.
The offense flowed briskly as junior transfer
Taryn Westerman dished out a season-high 41 assists as three different hitters managed 10-or-more kills including senior outside hitters
Karolina Damjanovic and
Hillary White with a team-high 12 while junior middle hitter
Miranda Byrd had 11.
"There's some stuff that we still have to work, but I'm definitely happy," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said. "I'm excited to get this win."
Westerman proved efficient leading the Mustangs to a .217 attack percentage, but MSU was just as impressive on defense as it posted 91 digs and 11 total blocks to limit the Patriots to a .107 team attack percentage.
"We live by our defense and we were able to get some really solid touches," Flores-Stafford said. "This was against a really solid team who already has wins against some of our sister schools."
Dallas Baptist dropped to 3-2, but came away with wins over Eastern New Mexico, East Central and Southeastern Oklahoma before falling to West Texas A&M last weekend at the Lady Buff Classic in Canyon.
Junior libero
Kiara Jordan led back row efforts with a season-high 27 digs as she logged 20-or-more digs for the 12th time in her career, but she had plenty of help.
Damjanovic completed her first career double-double with 12 digs and added four total blocks, while sophomore outside hitter
Shelbi Stewart narrowly missed the feat with nine kills but notched a career-best 18 digs.
Sophomore defensive specialist
Mallory Goon added 12 digs and Byrd led the way at the net by matching a career-high six total blocks.
Dallas Baptist was paced by freshman outside hitter Cameron Hartson, who finished with 13 kills and 14 digs.
Midwestern, who improved to 2-3, opens play at the Tarleton State Invitational against Southwest Baptist (Mo.) Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
