MSU dumps Chadron State, falls to NW Missouri

OMAHA, Neb. - Midwestern State split its opening games at the University of Nebraska-Omaha Volleyball Showcase Friday afternoon at Sapp Field house.

The Mustangs opened the season with a 25-11, 25-17, 25-11 win over Chadron (Neb.) State led by junior middle hitter Miranda Byrd's 11-kill performance while sophomore outside hitter Shelby Stewart added seven of her own.

Junior libero Kiara Jordan led back row efforts with 18 digs, while senior middle blocker Lauren Bayer finished with eight blocks.

But Midwestern had trouble with Northwest Missouri State's quick-strike offense in the second match as the Bearcats claimed each of the three sets by narrow margins 25-22, 25-21, 25-22.

"We didn't make adjustments and lost a little confidence," MSU assistant coach Natalie Rawson said. "We were a little more hesitant, but stayed close. We just have to work on the little things."

Senior opposite hitter Karolina Damjanovic paced the attack with nine kills against NWMSU, while Jordan finished 12 digs and junior setter Taryn Westerman notched 28 assists.

The Mustangs close tournament play with matches against Nebraska-Omaha at 11:45 a.m. and Emporia (Kan.) at 4:15 p.m.
