WICHITA FALLS, Texas - It may not have been pretty at times, but No. 19 Midwestern State extended its home field unbeaten streak in typical Mustangs' fashion in Thursday night's 2-0 win over Texas A&M International at the MSU Soccer Field.
"We call it a clean sheet," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "We're going to ride out our defense the way we did last year. The guys did a great job on the back line and that's how we've been able to grind out wins throughout the year. That's MSU soccer."
The win extended the unbeaten streak which dates back to 2007 to 22 games.
The Mustangs, who posted 12 shutouts a season ago, used a the back line combo of
Landon Fruge',
Kelly Gill,
Ryan Spence and
Dean Lovegrove to help returning All-American goalkeeper
Raul Herrera to his 12th shutout since transferring back to MSU prior to last season.
But it was reserves up front who gave the Mustangs their first score of the season as redshirt freshman
VcMor Eligwe kept the ball off the touch line along the left wing and found
Sam Broadbent on the far post to give MSU a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.
"A guy committed himself and Vc worked hard at keeping it alive," Elder said. "Sam did a great job of keeping his hips behind the ball. I didn't think the angle was good from the bench."
Eligwe was at it again in the second half again serving a cross from the right win as
David Freeland converted his first tally as a Mustang in the 78th minute.
Midwestern State plays host to Colorado State-Pueblo next Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
