Freeland, Broadbent jump start #3 MSU to 4-0 win over Colorado State-Pueblo

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's David Freeland and Sam Broadbent continued to be in the right place at the right time Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

The juniors once again tallied the opening two goals of the game as the Mustangs pulled away for a convincing 4-0 win over Colorado State-Pueblo in the Midwestern State Classic.

The win extended the Mustangs' home unbeaten streak to a school record 23 matches. MSU, which won 22-straight matches at the MSU Soccer Field from 1991-93, is 20-0-3 since suffering a 1-0 setback to West Texas A&M in the 2007 regular season finale.

"You can call them lucky goals, opportunistic or whatever," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "That was a great official who made a great advantage call on Freeland's goal."

Freeland took a feed from Paulo Teixiera which was originally intended for Chad Caldwell in the 20th minute.

Caldwell was taken down before he could touch the pass allowing the ball to roll onto the feet of Freeland who beat a stunned Colorado State-Pueblo keeper for his second goal of the season.

Broadbent made it 2-0 when he collected Dean Lovegrove's long serve off of the post with his second tally of the season - both have been off of rebounds - in the 40th minute.

The Mustangs continued the attack in the second half and made it 3-0 after Tex McCullough ran onto a long pass from the MSU defensive third from Landon Fruge' and scored between the keeper's legs in the 65th minute.

Junior midfielder Casey Hibbs closed out the scoring with a successful penalty kick in the 82nd minute.

The Mustangs took 34 shots and placed 11 on goal and didn't allow a shot until Connor Marcone fired from 30 yards out in the 70th minute for the Thunderwolves lone shot of the match.

"We looked pretty strong defensively," Elder said. "They were pinching two midfielder into the back so that really took away offensive opportunities and allowed us to possess the ball."

Midwestern State closes the classic against Colorado-Colorado Springs Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Northeastern State, a 3-2 winner over UCCS early Friday night, takes on Colorado State-Pueblo at 11 a.m. in the other game of the classic on Sunday.

The Thunderwolves slipped to 0-2.
