No. 2 Mustangs blitz St. Edward's, 6-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - There was no Sunday letdown for No. 2 Midwestern State.

The Mustangs hit St. Edward's with three first-half goals and cruised to a 6-1 non-conference win at the MSU Soccer Field.

"We had challenged the guys after struggling last week against Colorado-Colorado Springs," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "I was happy with the way we came out and our effort today."

It was a total team effort as six difference players tallied goals for the Mustangs, who improved to 5-0 on the season while extending their home field unbeaten streak to 26 matches dating back to the 2007 season.

"A lot of our attack was from the outside and we were able to work a lot of combinations," Elder said.

The midfield continued to shine after accounting for five tallies in Friday's 6-1 result over No. 10 Incarnate Word.

Bryce Taylor and Paulo Teixeira worked a combination allowing center back Ryan Spence to work forward and head in just his second career goal in the seventh minute of the contest to get the Mustangs going.

The midfield continued to work in the 27th minute when junior Sam Broadbent served a cross from the left wing that fellow mid Nathan Fitzgerald finished with another header just outside of the 6-yard box to make the score 2-0.

"Those guys (midfielders) are anxious to score," Elder said. "We struggled in that area last season, so it's pleasant to see early on this season."

The Mustangs stayed on the attack in the 41st minute as redshirt freshman B.A. Catney threaded a short through ball to David Freeland who beat St. Edward's keeper John Kaschak for his third goal of the season.

Taylor pushed the lead to 4-1 by collecting a loose ball in the box and pounding in his third goal of the weekend from 12 yards out before SEU's Joeski Williams snapped the shutout bid with an unassisted tally in the 64th minute.

Forwards Chad Caldwell and VcMor Eligwe tacked on goals in the 80th and 84th minute.

The Mustangs close their season-opening six-game home stand by playing host to Texas-Permian Basin Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

St. Edward's slipped to 3-2 on the season.
