No. 2 Midwestern, No. 10 Incarnate Word clash tonight

No. 2 Midwestern State plays host to No. 10 Incarnate Word in its Lone Star Conference opener Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

    Midwestern State extended its home field unbeaten streak to 24 games with a pair of wins over Colorado State-Pueblo and Colorado-Colorado Springs.
     
    But the Mustangs, who have outscored the opposition 7-0 while notching a 3-0 start, will face its stiffest challenge to date.
     
    MSU has enjoyed success against nationally ranked opposition since the beginning of the 2006 campaign.
     
    The Mustangs, who have advanced to the NCAA Division II postseason in each of the last four years, are 2-1-1 against opposition ranked in the NSCAA Top 5, 4-2-3 against Top 10 squads and 10-5-4 versus Top 25 opponents.
     
    Midwestern State have spent the last 48 reporting periods ranked in the NSCAA Division II Poll which includes 29 weeks ranked in the Top 10.
     
    During that time, the Mustangs have logged a 62-8-6 record (.855).

    Midwestern State senior midfielder Paulo Teixeira garnered Lone Star Conference after tallying a goal and an assist while helping the Mustangs to consecutive wins over Colorado State-Pueblo and Colorado-Colorado Springs last weekend in the Midwestern State Classic.
     
    The creative center mid from Brockton, Mass. has now scored six goals and dished out four assists in 21 matches over two seasons since transferring from Massasoit College prior to the 2009 season.
     
    Juniors Sam Broadbent and David Freeland have served as adequate front men for the Mustangs as each tallied goals in MSU's opening two wins of the season.
     
    Senior All-America goalkeeper Raul Herrera was named Lone Star Conference Goalkeeper of the Week after extending his season opening scoreless string to 256:31 which included his 15th career shutout Sunday against Colorado-Colorado Springs.

    Midwestern State and Incarnate Word meet for the 37th time on the pitch Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
     
    The Mustangs own a 19-13-4 edge in the series that dates back to 1986.
