Midwestern wins third straight, thumps Panhandle State 3-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State gained momentum with its third-straight victory with a convincing 25-8, 25-15, 25-22 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State in its home opener Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

"Momentum is obviously a good thing to have right now," MSU coach Venera Flores-Stafford said. "It's hard to go into conference play after playing two weeks against non-league teams, but we're feeling pretty good about ourselves. They have learned a lot in the last couple of weeks and now we want to put that to use."

The Mustangs open Lone Star Conference with a pair of road matches beginning Thursday night at Southeastern Oklahoma State before facing East Central Saturday night in Ada.

The starters got the team off to a stellar start as MSU blistered the Aggies to the tune of a .407 team attack percentage in the opening set before playing sparingly over the final two frames.

Senior right-side hitter Karolina Damjanovic led the team with nine kills while committing one error for a .471 attack percentage, while Miranda Byrd and Shelbi Stewart each tallied seven kills.

Junior outside hitter Hillary White enjoyed solid showing finishing with six kills, eight digs and two service aces.

The early lead allowed the Mustangs to work deep into the bench for an extended period.

"It's a good opportunity to maintain intensity and use some different lineups," Flores-Stafford said. "We did that tonight and were able to come out with a win."

Sophomore setter Kimberly Jeffrey logged significant time directing the attack off of the bench to finish with a team-high 18 assists.

Freshmen Caitlin Wallace (three blocks) and Brandi Flores (three kills, five digs) also made key contributions over the final two sets.

Junior libero Kiara Jordan led back row efforts with 12 digs.

Oklahoma Panhandle State fell to 3-8.
