Klutts, Whittley power Midwestern into contention at NSU Golf Classic

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Sophomores Taylor Klutts and Kendra Whittley have Midwestern State off to a flying start to the 2010-11 season as the Mustangs closed the opening 18 holes of the 12th Annual NSU Golf Classic in second place Monday at Cherry Springs Golf Club. "(Taylor and Kendra were in control all day of controlling the ball on a very demanding course," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "If you're not driving it well, you can work into trouble. I thought our girls handled it very well. The big key will be for us is can we put two rounds together. That's one thing we're talking about and trying to stay focused and have a chance to win it." The Mustangs combined for a first-round total of 308 (+20) and are just five strokes behind tournament leading host team Northeastern State as the RiverHawks posted a 303 (+15). Klutts tied for the tournament individual lead after carding a 1-over 73 and shares the lead with Northeastern State's Whitney McAteer. "Taylor was in the fairway all day," Ray said. "She hit the ball well and hit a lot of greens in regulation. She played some really good golf." Kendra Whittley stands in fifth after carding a 3-over 75, while sister Kyla Whittley fired an opening round 79 (+7) which was good enough to head into Tuesday's final round tied for 13th. Sophomore Megan Richardson logged a countable score of 81 (+9), while Lindsay Burkhart scored an opening round 82 (+10). "(Kyla, Megan and Lindsay) were really the key for us today," Ray said. "They weren't hitting the ball particularly well, but showed maturity to hang on for some good scores to keep us in a position to win." The 36-hole tournament concludes Tuesday afternoon with a first-flight time of 8 a.m.
