WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Nothing much went No. 3 Midwestern State's way in the final game of the MSU Invitational Sunday afternoon against Colorado-Colorado Springs.
"A lot of things went in their favor especially with the weather and humidity," MSU coach
Doug Elder said.
The Mustangs were hoping to use the Texas heat and a lot of depth to wear down the Mountain Lions, but the weather cooled after a 51-minute lightning delay just as the teams were making their way back onto the pitch for the start of the second half.
After the thunderstorm veered to the north, Midwestern State took finally took advantage of having a man advantage when
Paulo Teixeira volleyed in
Tex McCullough's throw-in in the 66th minute to provide the difference in a hard-fought match.
Colorado-Colorado Springs' Gabriel Causse earned consecutive cautions in the 36th and 38th minutes to draw an ejection, but the Mountain Lions continued to take game to MSU.
"They played with passion and intensity and they played hard," Elder said. "They were able to get good opportunities with just 10 guys."
Colorado-Colorado Springs mounted its best scoring opportunity before Causse earned the early exit in the 29th minute as Justin Miller blasted a shot off of MSU keeper
Raul Herrera to an open Matt Freisen who clanked his shot toward an open net off of the post before Miller blasted a final chance high over the crossbar.
Herrera survived the salvo to make three saves while earning his 15th career shutout while improving his career record to 19-3-5.
The Mountain Lions managed just three more shots over the final 62 minutes following the ejection, while Mustangs took control of the opportunity to pepper UCCS with 16 shots.
"I don't think any one individual played well, but as a team we were able to do enough to win," Elder said as the Mustangs improved to 3-0 on the season while extended their home field unbeaten run to 24 matches.
Midwestern plays host to No. 13 Incarnate Word in its Lone Star Conference opener Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
