Mustangs suffer first-round exit at NCAA II Regionals

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Midwestern State's Alex Odell-Michels and Lindsey Holcomb pulled the Mustangs back to within a match of the Northeastern State Thursday afternoon in the NCAA Division II South Central No. 2 Women's Tennis Regionals at RiverHawks Courts.

But Northeastern State rolled to three two-set victories at the Nos. 1-3 positions to claim a 5-1 win to advance to a second-round matchup with Cameron Friday morning at 10 a.m. for the right to advance to the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships to played from May 12-15 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Odell-Michels and Holcomb edged Ivana Belejova and Claire Chanay 8-5 at No. 2 doubles after the RiverHawks came off of the courts with victories at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots.

Northeastern followed with quick singles victories to finish off the Mustangs as Zuzanna Osinska beat Odell-Michels 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, Emina Spirtovic rolled up Kaja Banas 6-2, 6-1 and Michala Romanova defeated Monika Graff 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3.

The RiverHawks were also up a set at Nos. 5 and 6 when matches were pulled as Leah Roberts was the lone Mustang to hold an singles edge taking the first set 6-3 and was up in the second set 4-1 when NSU clinched the win.

Graff and Roberts suffered their only doubles defeat of the season by falling 8-6 to Osinska and Spritovic at No. 1 to fall to 19-1 this spring.

Midwestern State closes the season with a 14-9 mark as the Mustangs advanced to the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2008.
