No. 3 Mustangs stun Angelo State, sweep twin bill

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - And the beat just keeps on going for Midwestern State.

The No. 3-ranked Mustangs worked into extra frames for a pair of walk-off wins over Angelo State Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park as MSU claimed wins of 7-6 and 1-0 in 9 and 8 innings, respectively.

Midwestern continued its trend of finding a way in tight games as the Mustangs improved to 18-2 in games decided by one run this season. It was MSU's third-straight walk off victory as it claimed a 2-1 victory last weekend over Northeastern State.

The opener didn't appear to be going Midwestern's way as the Rambelles jumped all over Mustangs' starter Kristina Gutierrez for a pair of homers including a two-run shot off of Kacie Easley's bat in a four-run second inning and a solo blast for Brittany Astle in the sixth as ASU constructed a 6-0 going to the bottom of the sixth.

That's when the Mustangs finally cracked Angelo State starter Chelsea Nelson, who had limited the Mustangs to one hit through the first five innings.

After Elena Bennett was called out on a bang-bang play at first base to start the inning, Courtney Bingham, Mallory Mooney and Brittney Tanner strung three-straight singles together to load the bases.

But Nelson was able to wiggle out of the jam only yielding an RBI-single to right field by Nicki Duff as the Rambelles would take a five-run lead into the seventh.

The Mustangs continued their late-game barrage as McKenzie Sickler drew a leadoff walk before Natalie Rodriguez reach on an infield single and Elena Bennett drew another base on balls to load the bases.

Nelson induced Bingham to pop out for the first out of the inning before Mooney roped a single to right field to plate Sickler and pull MSU within four runs.

Tanner popped out to short for the second out of the inning, but Nelson was unable to nail down the win for the 'Belles.

Lauren Craig delivered a two-out, two-run single to right to cut the Angelo State advantage to 6-4, then ASU second baseman Alix Dean was unable to handle Duff's groundball which allowed MSU to extend the inning and cut the lead to a single run when Mooney came in for an unearned tally.

Alyson Reynolds followed with a run-scoring single to center field to plate Craig with the tying run to send the game into extra innings.

MSU ace Katie Petersen came on for Guitierrez, who allowed six runs - five earned - on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks in seven innings, for the eighth and ninth innings.

The senior from Plano retired each of the six batters she faced - five via the strikeout - as she claimed a win in her 22nd-straight decision to improve to 23-2 on the season.

Duff delivered the game-winning blow with a single to center in the ninth.

Tanner was the story in the second game as she went toe-to-toe with Angelo State starter April Haywood as the pitchers exchanged zeroes for each of the seven regulation innings.

The Mustangs claimed the win after Bingham stroked her 18th double of the season for the winning run in the eighth inning.

Tanner was impressive while claiming her eighth-straight win to improve to 18-2 on the season. The junior from Burkburnett limited the Rambelles to four hits while striking out six and walking one to earn her fifth shutout of the season.

Haywood was saddled with the loss to fall to 15-4 as she yielded one unearned run on five hits to go with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Midwestern State closes the program's best regular season in history at 48-6, while the Rambelles dropped to 39-12.

The Mustangs ride a school-record 16-game winning streak into the Lone Star Conference Championships next week in Durant.

MSU faces either Tarleton State or Texas A&M-Kingsville in the opening round at noon on Field No. 1. Win or lose, the Mustangs will play again at 2:30 p.m.

  • The Mustangs have recorded walk-off wins in each of their last three games. The Mustangs are now 18-2 this season in games decided by a single run.
