Mustangs, Rambelles to tangle in regular season finale

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State plays host to Angelo State in its regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitch for the twin bill is set for 3 p.m.

The Mustangs have already clinched its fourth Lone Star Conference North Division championship and head into the postseason tournament as the division's top seed.

MSU opens the LSC Championships at noon next Thursday at the Durant (Okla.) Multi-sport Complex. The Mustangs will face either Texas A&M-Kingsville or Tarleton State on Field No. 1.

About the Rambelles

Angelo State carried a 27-2 record and the NFCA's No. 2 national ranking when it tangled with Midwestern State at the Lone Star Conference Crossover in late March in Durant.

The then-No. 7 Mustangs survived the 'Belles 8-7 that day which sent ASU into a spiral as the lost eight of their next 15 games while falling out of the national poll.

The Rambelles have recovered to win their last four games and six of the last seven and will go into the LSC Championships as the South Division's No. 2 seed.

Angelo State boasts the second-best hitting team in the LSC with a .330 team batting average.

The Rambelles are paced by a pair of .400 hitters in junior second baseman Alix Dean (.427, 18 2B, 6 HR, 43 RBIs) and junior first baseman Kaycee Taylor (.403, 13 2B, 5 HR, 43 RBIs), while freshman catcher Kacie Easley is the team's top run producer hitting .347 with 10 doubles, 12 homers and 54 RBIs.

Senior outfielders Sarah DeMoss (.389, 50 runs) and Nicole Smith (.321, 10 2B, 50 runs) give the team plenty of speed with 39 and 36 stolen bases, respectively.

Angelo State also has a pair of solid senior options in the circle including Chelsea Nelson (21-7, 2.46 ERA) and April Haywood (15-3, 2.49 ERA).

About the Mustangs

Midwestern State looks to firm up its strangle hold on the South Central Region's top spot with a pair of wins against a regionally ranked opponent Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

MSU can also match the program record for home wins with its next victory at Mustangs Park.

The next home win would give MSU its 20th win at Mustangs Park this season which would also stand as a new record. Midwestern rolled up a 20-6 mark in 2005 when the team played its home games at the Sunrise Optimist Complex.

The Mustangs are currently riding the longest winning streak in school history at 14 games.

About the series

Midwestern State meets Angelo State for the 19th and 20th time on the diamond Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Rambelles own an 11-7 edge in the series, but the teams have split a pair of meetings this season.

Angelo State claimed a 5-2 decision at the St. Mary's Division II Classic in San Antonio before the Mustangs rallied for an 8-7 win on March 26 at the LSC Crossover in Durant, Okla.

The 'Belles were 4-2 against Midwestern at the Sunrise Optimist Complex, but will be making their first appearance at Mustangs Park.

Notables

  • Midwestern State has already set the program's single season win record with 46 and counting. The Mustangs are seven games shy of matching the Lone Star Conference high-water mark of 53 victories set in each of the last three years. Angelo State did it in 2007 while Southeastern Oklahoma State accomplished the feat in 2008 and 2009.
  • The Mustangs claimed its fourth Lone Star Conference North Division title and third outright championship. MSU shared the 2006 crown with Southeastern Oklahoma State.
  • Midwestern State will go for its third Lone Star Conference championship beginning next Thursday at noon against the South Division No. 4 seed on Field No. 1 at the Durant (Okla.) Multisport Complex. The South No. 4 is between Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Kingsville as the teams close the regular season with a three-game set in Stephenville. The TexAnns need to take two-of-three to claim a postseason berth.
  • The NCAA Division II Championship tournament field will be released during a selection show set for 9 a.m. on Monday, May 10 on NCAA.com.
MSU senior pitcher Katie Petersen is on an historic tear since opening the season with a 1-2 record with 3.63 ERA at the St. Mary's/NCAA Division II Classic on the first weekend of the season. Since, the Plano native is 21-0 with a 0.80 ERA in the 19 starts and three relief appearances since. She has not allowed more than two runs in any outing and delivered a pair of perfect games during the run.
  • Petersen is nearing a pair of career milestones she needs five wins to tie Brittany Willson (MSU/TWU, 2001, 04-06) and Christian Cearley (SOSU, 2002-06) for the most wins in Lone Star Conference history at 93. Petersen needs 47 strikeouts to pass Cearley for the league's all-time record. Cearley had 869, while Petersen currently has 823.
  • Junior pitcher Brittney Tanner continues to show her abilities as one of the best overall softball players in the Lone Star Conference. The Burkburnett native won each of her seven decisions during the month of April while posting a 1.47 ERA as she allowed 10 earned runs on 30 hits in 47 2/3 innings of work. She boasted 58 strikeouts and issued 12 walks. Tanner was also a great contributor at the dish where she was second on the team with a .354 average during the month as she slugged five doubles and three home runs while driving in 13 runs.
  • Redshirt-freshman Courtney Bingham has slyly constructed a 10-game hitting streak while filling in spot start duty while working her way back from injury. Bingham is hitting .448 with three doubles and nine RBIs during the run.
  • Bingham remains tied with Maranda Bishop (2009) for the most doubles in a single season in MSU history with 17.
  • Freshman shortstop Natalie Rodriguez needs two runs to become just the second Mustang to score 50 runs in a season. She will join former standout Lindsey Voigt, who scored 57 times during the 2008 season.
  • Centerfielder Elena Bennett needs three hits to become just the second freshman in school history to amass 60 hits in a season. She would join Cheyanne Paschal, who had a school-record 78 hits in 2007. Her 15 sacrifices are the most in a single season. Bennett will tie Lindsay Voigt for the most stolen bases in a single season in program history with her next steal. Voigt had 22 swipes in 2008.
  • Senior catcher Lauren Craig needs to play in six more games to become just the third MSU player to appear in 200 contests. Kristen Stonecipher played in 238 from 2005-08, while Jessica Rodriguez played in 229 from 2006-09.
  • Sophomore outfielder Nicki Duff has five triples in each of her first two seasons as a Mustang. She needs just three more to move to the top of MSU's all-time triples list. Allison Tidwell had 12 from 2004-06 and Maranda Bishop had 11 from 2007-09.
