WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's
Brittney Tanner weaved her second career one-hitter to shutout Oklahoma Panhandle State 5-0 in Game 1 Wednesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The junior from Burkburnett carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Kristen Curlin's popup into center field was carried away by a brisk north wind to land between three MSU's fielders for the Aggies' lone hit of the game.
Tanner improved to 13-2 on the season and logged 10 strikeouts in her second consecutive start.
Curlin was the only Aggie to reach base as it was ruled she was hit by a pitch in the first inning, but would never reach second.
The shutout was the fourth of the season for Tanner, who lowered her ERA to a career-best 1.79.
Junior third baseman
McKenzie Sickler put the Mustangs on top with a solo home run to center field in the third inning before senior catcher
Lauren Craig extended her hitting streak to 14 games with a run scoring single up the middle to plate
Nicki Duff for a 2-0 lead.
Sickler's sacrifice fly to center field in the fourth pushed the advantage to 3-0 in the fourth inning before the Mustangs put the game away with two more runs in the fifth.
Duff led off the frame with a single to left field and stole second then came around to score on
Natalie Rodriguez's solidly struck double to the left-field gap.
Rodriguez gave the Mustangs a five-run lead when she scored on Tanner's RBI single through the left side.
Curlin took the loss for OPSU, which fell to 2-31 on the season. The freshman right-hander yielded five runs -all earned - on 11 hits in five innings to fall to 1-13.
Alyson Reynolds, Craig and Sickler each had two hits to pace the MSU's 12-hit attack as the Mustangs won their fifth straight to improve to 37-6.
