Petersen outduels Malone, #3 MSU wins 2-1 in Game 2

ADA, Okla. - Midwestern State's Katie Petersen continued her roll Saturday afterooon as the senior pitcher led the third-ranked Mustangs to a 2-1 Lone Star Conference North Division win over East Central at Lady Tiger Field.

The senior pitcher from Plano allowed one run on five hits in the complete game victory to win her 16th-straight decision to improve to 17-2 on the season.

Petersen logged six strikeouts and walked one in the complete game victory.

Midwestern got off to a fast start when Nicki Duff drilled a leadoff tirple over ECU right fielder Cassandra Nordie's head in the first inning, then came around to score when Lauren Craig extended her season-best hitting streak to 10 games with a run-scoring single through the left side.

East Central starter Wanda Malone settled in to allowed just one run the rest of the way as she fell to 11-6 despite limiting the Mustangs to one earned run on seven hits in the complete game.

The Tigers knotted the game at 1-1 in the third inning when Nicole Sanchez lined a triple to right field , then came into score when Shelby Simmons grounded out to second.

The Mustangs plated the deciding run in the fourth inning as Alyson Reynolds smoked a one-out double to the left-field gap then scored when Petersen's line drive glanced off of ECU third baseman Kasey Barber's leg to give MSU a 2-1 advantage.

Duff paced MSU's seven-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Sanchez paced ECU with two hits of her own.

Midwestern State, which has 10 of its last 12 games, improved to 34-6 on the season and 10-2 against the LSC North, while ECU fell to 25-13 and 6-6.

The Mustangs play host to Cameron Tuesday afternoon in an LSC North twin bill at Mustangs Park. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
