TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - No. 7 Midwestern State played with the long ball early to outdistance Northeastern State 5-1 for a doubleheader sweep in Game 2 Tuesday afternoon at RiverHawks Park.
With the win, the Mustangs clinch the top seed in the LSC North Division and need one more win to claim the outright division title.
Midwestern plays host to the RiverHawks in a return doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
Junior starter
Brittney Tanner belted her third homer of the season just inside the left-field foul pole to lead off the top of the second inning.
After NSU starter Cayce Coleman drilled
Courtney Bingham in the ribs, sophomore
Mallory Mooney launched her second homer of the day - a high, majestic blast over the left-fence - to put the Mustangs out front 3-0.
That was more than enough for Tanner, who claimed a win in her sixth-straight decision to improve to 16-2 on the season. The junior from Burkburnett permitted one run on six hits, but struggled with her command of the outside corner as she tallied five strikeouts and three walks.
The Mustangs pushed the lead to 5-1 when Bingham's line drive eluded Northeastern first baseman Sydney Chapin's grasp in the fifth inning.
Northeastern struck for its lone run of the contest in the sixth after Kylie Morton and Casey Moyer reached on a pair of well-placed infield singles. Chapin would follow with a well-struck double to left field to drive in the RiverHawk run.
Bingham matched the offering with another RBI-single to plate Rodriguez in the seventh.
Tanner, Bingham and Mooney each collected two hits to pace MSU's nine-hit attack.
The Mustangs improved to 44-6 on the season and to 18-2 against the LSC North, while the RiverHawks dropped to 15-13 and 6-12.
