TOPEKA, Kan. - Midwestern State's Ryan Craven became the school's all-time leading tackler midway through the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon at the Lower, Inc. Kanza Bowl.

And freshman cornerback Neiko Conway was tabbed the most outstanding player for the Mustangs after returning an interception for 51 yards to set up a score.

That would be a summation of the MSU's highlights as Washburn (Kan.) rolled to a 45-14 victory at Hummer Sports Park.

Led by a deadly pass-and-catch combination of Dane Simoneau-to-Joe Hastings, the Ichabods piled up 520 total yards of total offense including 361 through the air and 159 on the ground. The total was the most yielded by the MSU defense this season.

Simoneau completed 18-of-26 passes for 350 yards including three touchdowns, but Hastings was easily the favorite target.

The senior from Wichita, Kan. was named Washburn's player of the game after making 10 receptions for 223 yards including a 74-yard score to open scoring in the first quarter.

Hastings' output was just the fourth time an opponent has accumulated 200 receiving yards against MSU. It was the most since Abilene Christian's Robb Spells had nine catches for 203 yards in 2005 and Howard Payne's Dale Joseph (10 receptions, 260 yards) is the only receiver to top the performance.

The Ichabods pushed the advantage to 10-0 on a 31-yard field goal by Steve Ivanisevic early in the second quarter.

Conway set up Midwestern's first score of the game when he intercepted Simoneau and returned the ball 51 yards to the Washburn 8-yard line. Three plays later, Lester Bush burst in from 4 yards out to pull the Mustangs to within 10-7.

It was all Washburn from then on.

Simoneau connected with Tore Hurst for a 19-yard TD connection 33 seconds before halftime as the Ichabods would score on each of their next four possessions to push the advantage to 38-7 on the second of Vershon Moore's two touchdown rushes in the third quarter.

The Mustangs would answer with a with a Keidrick Jackson 2-yard plunge to begin the fourth quarter. Even then, Washburn responded with a 4-yard TD run to close out the scoring with 11:01 to play.

Washburn limited the Mustangs to their second lowest offensive output of the season at 246 yards, while Midwestern permitted a season-high 520 total yards to the Ichabods.

Brandon Kelsey, who was making his second start at quarterback for injured 2009 Harlon Hill finalist Zack Eskridge, paced a 196-yard rushing day for MSU with 70 yards on 13 carries.

Senior Marcus Mathis used a 27-yard rush in the fourth quarter to move past Ross Harrison (2,418 yards from 2003-06) into third place on MSU's all-time rushing chart. The Rockwall High product finishes his career with 2,433 rushing yards.

Bush chipped in 52 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.

Kelsey was limited to 10-of-29 passing for 50 yards including two interceptions as the Mustangs were held under 100 passing yards for the third straight game.

Craven led the Mustangs' defensive effort with six tackles to finish with 267 career stops which is one more than Teddy Martyniuk, who made 266 tackles from 1988-91.

Midwestern State closes the season with an 8-4 mark as the Mustangs have now posted 11 consecutive winning campaigns.
