No. 4 Javelinas KO Mustangs, Eskridge

KINGSVILLE, Texas - Midwestern State all-time passing leader Zack Eskridge was forced out of action late in the first half and the Mustangs never recovered Saturday night at Javelina Stadium.

No. 4 Texas A&M-Kingsville outscored MSU 20-0 from that point on including a score with 8 seconds remaining score a 27-7 Lone Star Conference South Division win.

"They were able to stack the box on the quarterback and come after us," MSU coach Bill Maskill said. "We just made too many mistakes, but you have to give them credit. They are a good football team."

The Mustangs could only muster 42 yards of total offense after Eskridge's departure and were limited to a season-low 161 yards of total offense.

Texas A&M-Kingsville took control of the contest by scoring on each of its second half possessions including a pair rushing scores from Ryan Lincoln (8, 1) and two Christian Brom field goals. The Javelinas controlled the ball for more than 24 minutes in the second half and ran 50 plays in just four total drives.

Texas A&M-Kingsville drew first blood as Jonathan Woodson culminated an 11-play, 71-yard drive with a 2-yard scoring run with 6:49 to play in the first quarter.

The Mustangs answered with an impressive 14-play, 71-yard drive as Eskridge hit Desmond Ratliff with a 6-yard score with 18 seconds to go in the opening quarter.

Eskridge completed 9-of-15 passes for 72 yards leaving the game after being taken down by the face mask on a Kendrick Matthews tackle late in the second quarter.

The loss snapped a five-game Midwestern winning streak over the Javelinas with victories by an average of 34.8 points a game as the Mustangs handed TAMUK its worst loss in program history by a 73-6 margin back in 2007 at Memorial Stadium.

With MSU out of timeouts, the Javelinas needed two chances from a yard out to secure a commanding three touchdown advantage on Lincoln's second score of the half with 8 seconds to play.

Midwestern State dropped to 7-3 on the season and 3-3 in LSC South play, while the Javelinas improved to 9-1 and 5-1.

The Mustangs play host to Northeastern State in an LSC crossover contest next Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
