Game Day: Two of nation's best set for second round battle

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 2 Midwestern State meets No. 3 Colorado Mines in the nation's premiere matchup Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Division II Championships at the MSU Soccer Field.

The winner advances to the national quarterfinals next Sunday against the victor of the West Region final between Chico State (Calif.) and Grand Canyon (Ariz.) which is set for a 3 p.m. kickoff.

With a win over the Orediggers and a Chico State loss, the Mustangs would play host to Grand Canyon next Sunday at the MSU Soccer Field. If Chico State defeats the Antelopes, the winner of MSU and Colorado Mines will be California bound.

The Mustangs last advanced to the national quarterfinals in 2008 after making the program's first Final Four appearance in 2007.

MSU completed its second unbeaten regular season campaign in program history and bring a 17-0-2 mark into Sunday's contest. The Mustangs are also unbeaten in their last 31 home matches dating back to the regular season finale in 2007.

About the Matchup

On the attack

Colorado Mines and Midwestern State bring the nation's top two scoring offenses into its second round matchup.

The Orediggers lead the nation scoring 3.26 goals per game while posting three players with 30-or-more points.

Freshman midfielder Tesho Akindele ranks fourth in NCAA Division II with 2.32 points and 1.0 goals per game scoring 19 goals and tallying seven assists in 20 matches.

Junior midfielder Chike Sullivan adds 11 goals and 11 assists while freshman forward Baski Baker has accounted for 12 goals and six assists.

The Mustangs rank second in the nation with a 3.06 goals per match average but spreads around the attack much more.

Eight different MSU players have accounted for at least four goals led by reserve forward VcMor Eligwe who has 10 goals and five assists but is trailed closely by David Freeland (8 goals, 3 assists), Bryce Taylor (6 goals, 6 assists), Tex McCullough (7 goals, 2 assists) and Nathan Fitzgerald (5 goals, 4 assists).

Hard-nosed Defense

Southern New Hampshire is the only team keeping the match from a also being a battle of the top two defenses.

The Penmen, who fell to top-ranked Franklin Pierce in penalty kicks Saturday night, allow 0.42 team goals against average to lead the nation.

Midwestern is second allowing a 0.43 goals against average letting in 10 goals in 19 matches.

Senior All-America goalkeeper Raul Herrera ranks fifth in NCAA II with a 0.496 goals against average while helping the Mustangs to 11 shutouts.

Colorado Mines is third in the nation with a 0.51 goals against average permitting 11 tallies in 20 matches.

Sophomore goalkeeper Manville Strand rates fourth in NCAA II with a 0.491 goals against average while helping the Orediggers to 12 shutouts.
