Game Day: #25 Midwestern clinging to NCAA II postseason hopes

Setting the Stage

No. 25 Midwestern State battles Northeastern State in its final Lone Star Conference Crossover contest Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

The conference's current members from the Oklahoma-based North Division have elected to leave the league with Northeastern State and Central Oklahoma going to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) while Southeastern Oklahoma, East Central and Southwestern Oklahoma will join with Arkansas Tech, Southern Arkansas, Arkansas-Monticello, Henderson State, Ouachita Baptist and Harding to form a new Division II league.

The Lone Star Conference will continue as an 11-team league with MSU, Abilene Christian, Texas A&M-Kingsville, West Texas A&M, Tarleton State, Angelo State, Incarnate Word, Eastern New Mexico, Texas A&M-Commerce, Cameron and Texas Woman's University.

The breakup ends a 14-year affiliation as a two-division conference which at one time included Harding and Ouachita Baptist out of Arkansas.

Kickoff for the Mustangs and RiverHawks is set for 1 p.m.

For the Record

The winner of the Midwestern State and Northeastern State will likely gain the inside track as the Lone Star Conference's selection into the Kanza Bowl.

The Kanza Bowl is set to be played with a combatant from each of the LSC and MIAA on Saturday, Dec. 4 at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka, Kan.

Last season, West Texas A&M defeated Nebraska-Omaha 31-25 in the game's inaugural matchup.

However, Midwestern State's eyes are still on a bigger prize as the Mustangs came into the week one spot out of making its fourth NCAA Division II playoff field.

MSU is seventh and is one of five teams with a 7-3 mark going into the regular season's final week including No. 5 West Texas A&M, No. 6 Missouri Western, No. 8 Central Washington and No. 10 Humboldt State.

With a win, the Mustangs would await their fate when the 24-team NCAA II playoff field is released between 2 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday on ESPNews.

MSU qualified for the postseason in 2004, 2006 and 2009.

Who's Hot

Freshman defensive back Neiko Conway continued his breakout of the last few weeks with a season-high 13 tackles last Saturday night at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The game came on the heels of Conway's six-tackle, 99-yard interception return performance with a blocked field goal that earned him LSC South Defensive Player of the Week honors the previous week against Tarleton State.

About the Series
