SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Paulo Teixeira scored a goal and assisted to lead Midwestern State to a 2-1 result over St. Mary's (Texas) Sunday afternoon at the STMU Soccer Field.
But the Mustangs had to survive a late charge to retain the only unblemished record in NCAA Division II at 8-0.
"We played fairly well for being on the road after an emotional win Friday night," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "St. Mary's always improves throughout the season and we allowed them to gain confidence late in the second half."
Teixeira had a hand in the Mustangs' first tally when his shot bounded off the hands of St. Mary's goalkeeper Patrick Kasperitis allowing redshirt freshman
VcMor Eligwe to tap in his third goal of the season to give MSU a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
Teixeira gave the Mustangs a two-goal advantage in the 47th minute with his third goal of the season.
"He cut it back, beat two guys and launched it right over the keeper from about 25 yards out," Elder said. "It was a great goal."
St. Mary's rallied to pull within a goal after Edward Serrano tallied an unassisted score in the 78th minute.
The goal sparked the Rattlers who pressured the Mustangs for the final 10 minutes of the contest, but were unable to net the equalizer.
"They won every one corner kicks late in the game and really took it at us," Elder said. "We have to figure out how to step up and be more urgent in those situations."
Midwestern State returns to the MSU Soccer Field for a pair of LSC contests against Eastern New Mexico on Friday and rival West Texas A&M on Sunday.
