WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 2 Midwestern State felt just a tad frustrated suffering through 220 of scoreless soccer while earning a pair of draws last weekend.
"We felt like we had lost a game and it was very depressing," MSU coach
Doug Elder said.
So the Mustangs got better quickly Friday night against Northeastern State as junior
Nathan Fitzgerald banged in a header in the third minute before the flood gates opened for 10-0 win as the Mustangs clinched their fifth-straight Lone Star Conference championship.
"It was a great start," Elder said. "It reminded of a few weeks ago. The early goals got the crowd and team energized."
The 10 goals were the most since Midwestern rolled the University of Texas-Dallas 11-0 in the opening round of the NAIA Sectional Playoffs in 1995.
Fitzgerald finished off freshman
Chad Caldwell's header from a throw-in by
Casey Hibbs to get the scoring going then Caldwell started a quick combination up the middle of the field to
Paulo Teixeira who delivered a nice touch pass to
David Freeland to put MSU up 2-0 in the seventh minute.
Tex McCullough and
Chris Dwyer tallied goals to push the advantage to 4-0 at the intermission.
Freeland and McCullough would tack on goals in the second half to join
VcMor Eligwe with two goals each as
Bryce Taylor and
Sam Broadbent also got in on the act with tallies of their own.
The Mustangs improved their regular season and home field unbeaten streaks to 31 and 30 matches with the result.
MSU takes on NAIA St. Thomas (Texas) in its home finale Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field before closing the regular on the road next weekend at Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M.
Northeastern State fell to 7-9 and 1-6.
