Lovegrove's PK lifts No. 2 MSU past St. Thomas, 1-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - It was definitely a dog day Sunday for No. 2 Midwestern State at the MSU Soccer Field.

The Mustangs appeared to be a step slower, while NAIA St. Thomas out of Houston, Texas used a pack mentality of their own to keep as many defenders in front of the ball as possible.

"We were very sluggish today," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "I'm not sure if it was the heat or that we were coming off of an emotional win Friday night, but we shouldn't have been 0-0 with this club."

MSU junior defender Dean Lovegrove buried a penalty kick in the 97th minute to lift the Mustangs to a 1-0 win in overtime.

The result extended Midwestern's regular season unbeaten streak to 31 games and stretch the unbeaten string at the MSU Soccer Field to 30 matches dating back to the regular season finale in 2007. The Mustangs haven't lost a regular season match since falling to Incarnate Word in the first game of the 2009 campaign in San Antonio.

MSU remains the lone undefeated side in NCAA Division II men's soccer at 14-0-2. The Mustangs closed the regular season with a pair of conference games at Eastern New Mexico on Friday and at rival West Texas A&M on Sunday.

"We should have buried our chances early and that would have changed the whole game," Elder said. "They packed it in and were able to build confidence through the rest of the match."

Junior midfielder Nathan Fitzgerald trapped a crossing pass in the 33rd minute with the St. Thomas keeper Lukas Miko Simon out of position but his shot was blocked by a defender allowing Simon enough time to make a tough save on Fitzgerald's hard volley off of the rebound.

Midwestern State peppered the St. Thomas back line with 22 shots while the Celts managed just five.

"You have to take your hat off to them," Elder said. "They came in here and played hard and hung with us. I definitely respect the way they played."

St. Thomas dropped to 9-4-2 on the season.
