DUNCAN, Okla. - Sophomore Kendra Whittley fired an opening round 75 Monday afternoon and is two strokes off of the lead at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate played at the Par-72, 5,975-yard course at The Territory Golf Resort.
 
Whittley's efforts typified a gutty first-day effort by the Mustangs, who carded a total of 320 (+32) to stand seventh.
 
"It was really windy," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "The girls did a good job of remaining patient. We hit some bad shots, but with this wind you're going to do that."
 
The Mustangs head into Tuesday's final round seven strokes out of third place following Redlands CC (313), Central Oklahoma (314), Nebraska-Omaha (314) and Incarnate Word (317).
 
Tarleton State and Northeastern State stand atop the team leader board of the 16-team field with totals of 304 and 308, respectively.
 
"This is a good regional field on a great golf course," Ray said.
 
Kendra Whittley is fifth on the individual leader board two strokes behind Tarleton State's Katy Ward and Northeastern State's Whitney McAteer, who both recorded rounds of 73 (+1).
 
Sophomore Taylor Klutts is 12th with a first round total of 78 (+6), while Lindsay Burkhart and Lauren Romines notched countable scores of 83 (+11) and 84 (+12) respectively to stand 46th and 55th.
 
Senior Kyla Whittley shot an 87 (+15) to place 66th while Megan Richardson fired a 95 (+23) to place 85th while competing as an individual medalist.
 
Midwestern State concludes the fall portion of its schedule with the final round of the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Tuesday morning.
