Make it 9! Opportunistic MSU rolls past Bronchos 3-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Central Oklahoma seemed to be in control of just about every facet of the game in the first half Sunday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

Everything except the scoreboard as No. 19 Midwestern State converted its lone opportunity in the opening half before putting the Bronchos away for a 3-0 Lone Star Conference victory.

"They really took it to us in the first half," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "They outshot us and were more physical than we were. We'll have to take a look at the film and learn from it."

Central Oklahoma held a 12-4 edge in shots in the opening half, but only managed to place one shot on frame - from the right wing off of the boot of Katy Kashwer in the 36th minute.

But the Mustangs truly dodged a bullet in the 12th minute when Kashwer was unable to find the open net and banged a shot off of the far post.

Just eight minutes later, MSU senior forward Jordan Smith connected with Brandy O'Neal on a through ball. O'Neal worked through a UCO defender and finally beat Samantha Rusk on a low shot to the far post for her third goal of the season to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute.

It didn't take the Mustangs long to take control of the game in the second half.

Junior forward Kelsey Hill intercepted a ball in the offensive third and fed a pass to fellow striker Lindsay Pritchard, who settled ball and blasted a shot off of the crossbar and into the goal just 14 seconds after intermission for a 2-0 lead.

"We have very talented forwards and the team works well with them," Trimble said. "We're definitely blessed at that position."

Pritchard's ninth goal of the season followed in the 73rd minute when Maddie Fraser fed a through ball once again to the right wing. Pritchard chested it, streaked to goal and easily beat the UCO keeper to put the game away.

The win was the ninth straight for the Mustangs and is the longest since MSU won 15 in a row in Trimble's first season at the helm in 1998. With the decision, Midwestern also completes a clean home slate at 7-0 for the first time in program history.

MSU (12-1, 7-0) hits the road next weekend for a pair of critical LSC matches against Incarnate Word on Friday and Angelo State on Sunday. The Cardinals and Rambelles are part of a three-way tie with Abilene Christian for second place at 6-1.

Central Oklahoma dipped to 7-7 and 3-4.
