WICHITA, Kan. - No. 2 Midwestern State used three second-half goals to subdue Newman (Kan.) 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Field.
"It's a hard place to play, but we played better than we did Friday," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "We came out stronger and missed a few chances early that would have changed the course of the game. The longer it stayed tied, the harder they played."
The win extends MSU's best start in school history to 12-0 as the Mustangs also stretched their regular season unbeaten streak to 28 matches dating back to a 1-0 loss in last season's season opener at Incarnate Word.
The Mustangs make the return to Benson Stadium next Friday to take on the seventh-ranked Cardinals of UIW, but will take the momentum of a pair of hard-fought road decisions after edging Northeastern State Friday afternoon in Tahlequah.
"These were two good road wins and it's going to get tougher from here," Elder said. "We look forward to returning home for a good week of practice."
Midwestern outshot the Jets 25-2 and finally drew first blood on an own goal in the 64th minute.
"Dean (Lovegrove) hit a corner kick that the keeper went to hit over the crossbar, but just knocked into the goal," Elder said. "It was a shame for him (Newman's Robin Allard) because he is a really good keeper."
The Mustangs took advantage of a foul just outside of the box in the 89th minute when Lovegrove drove in his first goal of the season on a free kick from 20 yards out to make the score 2-0.
MSU would add a third tally in the 90th minute courtesy of
VcMor Eligwe who knocked his sixth goal of the season on an assist from
Bryce Taylor.
Newman, a Heartland Conference member, dropped to 3-9.
