SAN ANGELO, Texas - Angelo State's Casie Adams sank a pair of free throws with 1.9 seconds to play to salt away a 62-58 win over Midwestern State in its Lone Star Conference South Division opener Wednesday night at Junell Center.
The loss snaps the Mustangs two-game road winning streak as MSU fell to 6-8 on the season and 0-1 in the LSC South, while the Rambelles improved to 8-7 and 1-0.
Angelo State survived a subpar performance from the free throw line in the game's final minute as the 'Belles connected on just 4-of-8 shots barely surviving despite taking a 59-54 lead wion a pair of Adams' free throws with 23.5 seconds to play.
Senior point guard
Michelle Duff completed a traditional three-point play with 14.8 seconds to go to pull MSU within 59-57, but the Mustangs were unable to advantage of three clutch possessions allowing Angelo State to clint to a 60-57 lead with 10.3 seconds to go.
Junior forward
Nolisha Markham misfired on a 3-pointer form the right corner that would have tied the game with less than 5 seconds to go, but
Aqueelah Watkins gathered in the rebound and was inexplicably fouled Leah LeMaire but missed a great layup opportunity.
Watkins hit the first free throw to pull the Mustangs within 60-58, but her air ball on an intentional miss allowed the Rambelles to escape with the win.
Sophomore guard
Savannah Carver hit three 3-pointers on her way to a team-high 15 points, while Watkins notched her third double-double in her last four outings with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Markham also recorded her second double-double of the campaign with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Perkins paced Angelo State with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Midwestern State plays host to No. 9 West Texas A&M next Wednesday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
