Incarnate Word outlasts Mustangs in five

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Incarnate Word rode Edie Weise's big night to a 3-2 win over Midwestern State Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The 6-0 senior middle blocker put down a match-high 17 kills and added four blocks as the Cardinals improved to 7-2 after claiming the defensive struggle 25-20, 20-25, 25-16, 25-18, 15-11.

Sesley Graves, Hillary White and Miranda Byrd each finished with 11 kills each and sophomore Dimery Michaels finished with a season-high 40 assists to pilot the Mustangs to a .180 attack percentage and a team high 51 kills.

But the Cardinals, who notched 90 digs, managed keep the ball alive with the defensive efforts of libero Spencer Ladd's 22-dig performance to fuel UIW's .213 team percentage. Incarnate Word also placed three in double-digit kills with Anna Herr finished with 12 while Nicole Morfin completed the double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs.

Midwestern State also enjoyed a big defensive night as the Mustangs had 79 digs as a team with sophomore libero Kiara Jordan contributing 23 digs, while White finished off her first double-double of the season with 19 digs to go along with 11 kills - both were season highs.

Junior middle blocker Lauren Bayer completed a solid all-around night with nine kills and five digs while leading the Mustangs to 11 total blocks with two solo and six block assists.

Byrd added five block assists while Graves and Tiana Bond pitched in three block assists each while freshman Shelbi Stewart assisted another.

The Mustangs (1-8) open the Rockhurst Invitational with No. 6 Washburn (Kan.) Friday at 11 a.m. in Kansas City, Mo.
