Mustangs use defense to force Drury to brink, but fall 3-2

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State looked brilliant on the defensive throughout much of its opening match Friday afternoon at the MSU Hampton Inn-vitational.

The middle blocker tandem of Sesley Graves and Lauren Bayer combined for 8.5 of the Mustangs 14 total block, while Kiara Jordan led a group of five players with double-digit digs.

But Drury's Krystal Glessner hammered MSU with four-straight service to being the fourth set to give the Panthers momentum in a five-set win - 25-15, 17-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-11 - at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs' relentless intensity on the back row allowed MSU to recover from a first set setback to claim the second and third sets as Jordan had 18 digs followed by sophomore outsider Hillary White (15), sophomore outside hitter Miranda Byrd (13), freshman defensive specialist/setter Taylor Parker (12) and freshman setter Kimberly Jeffrey (11).

Midwestern forced Drury into a -.048 hitting percentage in the second set and a .176 mark in the third, but the Panthers took the lead from Glessner in the fourth set to regain momentum while committing just two errors in the fourth set to take control of the match.

Panthers' setter Austin Warren posted a double-double with 49 assists and 13 digs to pilot the Drury offense which was led by junior outside hitter Kayla Hallebusch, who finished with 13 kills.

Byrd paced the Midwestern attack with 12 kills and a cool .257 attack percentage, while Jeffrey and Parker each completed double-double with 19 and 13 assists, respectively.

Midwestern State, which fell to 0-5, takes on No. 4 Emporia State (Kan.) at 6:30 p.m. at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Drury improved to 5-0 on the season.
