Shelbi Stewart seemed more than happy to play the part of hero.
The freshman outside hitter from Pflugerville High delivered 15 kills to ignite the Mustangs in a 25-20, 21-25, 17-25, 25-14, 25-7 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State.
The Mustangs improved to 4-13 on the season, but more important kept pace with the Lone Star Conference leaders by upping their league mark to 2-0.
Stewart seemed to deliver one big hit after another after the Storm answered a first set dominated by MSU with two-straight wins, but the Mustangs just wouldn't allow Southeastern to deliver the knockout punch.
Mallory Goon, another freshman, finished with just six digs, but her play energized a Mustang back row which produced players with more than 10 digs.
Sophomore
Hillary White, who also added nine kills, led the way with 28 digs, sophomore libero
Kiara Jordan added 19, setters
Dimery Michaels and
Kimberly Jeffrey had 14 each.
The Mustangs, who had a season-high 106 total team digs, frustrated the Storm into 32 errors and a .059 team attack percentage.
Junior middle blocker
Lauren Bayer delivered an outstanding all-around match with eight kills, 11 digs and eight total blocks as part of an 11-block effort.
Sophomore outside hitter
Miranda Byrd was also a big contributor with 14 kills and nine digs.
Jeffrey had career-high 34 assists to complete her second double-double, while Michaels added 17 assists of her for her second double-double, as well.
Southeastern Oklahoma was paced by sophomore middle blocker Brittany McDonald who slammed down 11 kills, but committed errors for a .075 kill percentage.
The Savage Storm slipped to 13-5 and 2-1.
Midwestern State plays host to East Central (Okla.) Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
