Hill strikes twice to lead No. 12 Mustangs past Oklahoma Baptist, 2-0

SHAWNEE, Okla. - Kelsey Hill scored a pair of goals to ignite No. 12 Midwestern State past Oklahoma Baptist Tuesday afternoon at the Bison Soccer Complex.

"We really didn't play good soccer in the first half," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "We just couldn't connect on passes and gave the ball way too much, but we started playing a lot better after intermission."

Hill made sure the Mustangs didn't fall behind even with a lot of sluggish play in the opening half as the sophomore from Wichita Falls Rider stepped in front of Oklahoma Baptist keeper Sarah K. Robinson to head in her second goal of the season in the 16th minute off of a restart.

"It was a nice goal," Trimble said. "Kari (Bristow) drove the ball deep into the box. The keeper came out to grab it and Kelsey slipped in front of her and finished."

The goal allowed the Mustangs to go into the intermission with a 1-0 lead despite being outshot 8-5 including a 5-1 edge of OBU on shots on goal according to official statistics.

Midwestern stepped up play in the second half and put the game away in the 71st minute.

Freshman midfielder Maddie Fraser beat a few Bison in the midfield before serving a pass to senior striker Katy Lukert, who beat another defender and hit an oncoming Hill on the far post to give the Mustangs a commanding 2-0 lead.

MSU's goalkeeping combo of senior Ashley Meek and freshman Mallory Whitworth combined for nine save for the Mustangs' fourth shutout of the season.

Midwestern, who is off to the best start in program history at 5-0-1, remains on the road for matches at Texas A&M International on Friday before facing its biggest challenge of the season thus far against Incarnate Word Sunday in San Antonio.

"I was a little worried about playing a midweek game going into the big weekend," Trimble said. "I was afraid we might overlook, but I'm proud of the girls for remaining focused."

The loss snapped Oklahoma Baptist's two-match winning streak as the Bison dropped to 5-3.
