SAN ANTONIO, Texas - No. 14 Midwestern State was relentless Sunday afternoon in a physical affair at St. Mary's Field.
The Mustangs pelted St. Mary's with 22 shots and dominated play to earn a 3-0 shutout of St. Mary's for their fifth-straight win.
"It was a tough, hard-fought game," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "We were persistent and stuck with it and really overcame a ruggedly called game."
The game featured just 14 fouls, but the bookings were fast and furious as eight cautions and a pair of ejections including Rattlers sophomore forward Daniel Kelly and to a member of the MSU bench.
The Mustangs (5-1) scored on a restart in the 39th minute when redshirt-freshman
Dean Lovegrove served a ball into the box. Junior defender
Allen Thomson collected a deflection and bang in a shot off of the far post to give Midwestern a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
MSU put the match away with a pair of goal midway through the second half.
Sophomore midfielder
Nathan Fitzgerald tapped a through ball to
Tex McCullough who worked past St. Mary's keeper Brett Collier to find the open net for his second goal of the season in the 73rd minute.
Six minutes later, senior forward
Kyle Kmiec took a perfectly time through ball from the back line into the box and found
Nick Auditore for his third goal of the season which also gave Midwestern a 3-0 lead.
The MSU defense locked down on the Rattlers after allowing nine shots on goal in Friday's 1-0 win at Texas A&M International to help junior goalkeeper
Raul Herrera to notch his fourth shutout of the season without the trouble of making a save.
The Mustangs play host to rival West Texas A&M Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
St. Mary's fell to 2-3-1.
