WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 14 Central Missouri pounded the box and made plenty of opportunities Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
But Midwestern State keepers
Ashley Meek and
Mallory Whitworth sent the Jennies packing without a goal to show for their efforts as the Mustangs came away with a 1-0 win.
"Central Missouri played very well and controlled the tempo of the game," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "We were fortunate to counter and get the goal."
Senior forward
Katy Lukert recovered possession near the midline and worked forward before lacing a pass to
Kelsey Hill at the top of the box.
The sophomore cut toward the near post, beat the defender and laced a bullet to the far post for her first goal of the season.
It was just one of two shots for the Mustangs in the opening half as the Jennies, who fell to 0-2, kept possession and peppered Meek with 10 shots - four on goal. Meek, who started the opening half before giving way to Whitworth after intermission.
Central Missouri forward Melanie Hall, last season's MIAA Player of the Year, gave the Jennies a great opportunity in the 8th minute of the match as she worked to the touchline and served a dangerous cross through the 6-yard box, but Katie O'Keefe couldn't connect on the header to the open net.
That would be the only clean shot the Jennies would have, but not the end of the opportunities, but Meek was up for the challenge.
The senior goalkeeper lunged from the near post to get a glove on Kayla Shain's blast from 10 yards out to deny the Jennies in the 18th minute before stoning hall on a breakaway opportunity in the 34th minute.
"Those were some of the best saves I've seen in a long time," Trimble said. "She made some athletic saves, then Mallory came in and controlled the ball in the air. We are fortunate to have two really good keepers."
Meek had four saves in the opening half before Whitworth came on to save three more in the second half as the duo combined on MSU's second-straight shutout to open the season.
Midwestern State goes for its third-straight win Saturday at New Mexico Highlands. Kickoff is set for noon in Las Vegas.
