WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Hard work and determination were on display Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
And, maybe a little bit of attitude as
Haley Crandall put away a rebound goal in the 67th minute to lift Midwestern State to a 1-0 win over St. Mary's (Texas) in a season opener which featured 24 fouls, four cautions and matching ejections.
"They play hard, are very physical and came right at us," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "Once we settled down, we played some good soccer."
Neither side was able to assert control of the match until the Mustangs worked a ball across the box to give sophomore forward
Lindsay Pritchard room to operate.
"The girls did a good job on the wings to change the point of attack and find a good shot," Trimble said.
Pritchard ripped a shot from 12 yards out, but St. Mary's keeper Mari Edwards maintained position and allowed the ball to squirt free.
Crandall, a Weatherford High product, collected the loose ball and found the back of the net to notch a goal in her collegiate debut.
The Mustangs were able to take advantage of equal opportunities as each team managed to place seven shots on goal.
But Midwestern's goalkeeper tandem of senior
Ashley Meek and
Mallory Whitworth combined for the shutout. Meek was credited with three saves, while Whitworth had four.
"I'm really happy with the outcome and I'm very happy with the play of our keepers," Trimble said.
The Mustangs continue the early season home stand on Sunday when they face No. 14 Central Missouri. Kickoff is set for noon.
