WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State needed just five inning to pound out 11 hits in a 10-1 run-rule win over Incarnate Word Wednesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The Mustangs, who have now won three-straight games, improved to 26-14 on the season. Midwestern resumes Lone Star Conference North Division play Saturday afternoon against No. 4 Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant. First pitch for the twin bill is set for 2 p.m.
Freshman third baseman
Mallory Mooney paced Midwestern by going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run as the Mustangs pounded out nine singles, a double and a triple in the runaway win.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of run-scoring singles from
Tabitha Yannetti and Mooney, while
Jessica Rodriguez delivered the first of her two sacrifice flies of the game.
Midwestern converted
Nicki Duff's triple to lead off the third inning into its fourth run as Rodriguez slapped a single through the box to give the Mustangs a 4-0 lead.
Incarnate Word clawed back for a run in the top of the fourth inning as Kelley Moritz led off with a sharply hit double to the right-field gap, but MSU starter
Brittney Tanner bared down by including Kaylen Skinner to foul out to third base and Sarah Holub to fly out to right field.
But Moritz, who advanced to third on the Skinner's flyout, would score on Jenny Whitt's two-out bunt to pull UIW to within 4-1.
The Mustangs put the game away by sending 10 hitters to the plate in a six-run fourth keyed by a pair of bases loaded walks, a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez, a run-scoring by Mooney and an RBI-double by
Lauren Craig.
Tanner coasted to the victory for MSU to improved to 12-5 on the season as she yielded a run on six hits with three strikeouts.
Incarnate Word starter Lea Padilla took the loss to fall to 8-15 surrendering nine runs - all earned - on nine hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
The Cardinals dropped to 20-25 on the season.
