WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Lauren Craig's run-scoring single to left field capped a thrilling come-from-behind win as Midwestern State bested No. 4 Southeastern Oklahoma State in Game 2 Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The win snapped a four-game skid for the Mustangs who improved to 24-14 on the season and 10-8 in Lone Star Conference North Division play.
Midwestern plays host to Incarnate Word Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Mustangs Park. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
The Mustangs handed All-America pitcher Marjorie Johnson (20-2) her second loss of the season after the big right-hander relieved starter Jami McAdoo in the sixth inning.
Johnson was able to work out of a one-out, two runners in scoring position jam in the sixth with two strikeouts but was unable to work herself off of the hook in the seventh.
Maranda Bishop and
Nicki Duff led off the inning with a pair of singles through the left side of the Southeastern defense before
Tabitha Yannetti sacrificed the runners into scoring position.
Johnson, who had struggled with her command throughout the doubleheader, bounced pitch into
Jessica Rodriguez's ankles to lead the bases then worked the count to 2-1 to Craig before McAdoo was reinserted.
McAdoo worked the count full before Craig laced a shot over SOSU left fielder Erika Bernal who was drawn in for a potential play at the plate.
MSU starter
Brittney Tanner improved to 11-5 after yielding two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and five walks in the complete-game victory.
Southeastern Oklahoma struck for single runs in the second, third and fourth innings but the Mustangs were able to hang close after notching a run of their own in the second pulling to within 3-2 on Alyson Reynold's seventh homer of the season in the fourth.
Amanda Potysman joined Bishop and Duff with two hits each to pace MSU's nine-hit attack.
